4.5 INTERCEPT SURVEYS – SURVEY SCOPE AND METHODOLOGY
A total of 1,200 customer interviews were conducted in the following locations:
SURVEY LOCATION SAMPLE SIZE
Noosa Junction, including Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Fair and Plaza 495
Hastings Street, including the lower end of Noosa Drive 339
Tewantin along Poinciana Avenue from Sidoni Street to Memorial Avenue/Dylan Street 261
Noosaville River precinct along the commercial area of Gympie Terrace from The Cockle 105
Shell to James Street, including part of Thomas Street
TOTAL 1,200
The purpose of the surveys was to measure the incidence of usage by locals and visitors and to
determine the types of retail, leisure and other activities undertaken within each precinct. The findings
from the survey have been incorporated into the analysis of the role and function of each precinct
Interviews were conducted in two separate weeks to include a school holiday period and a period without
holidays. The number of interviews conducted during the holiday week and outside holidays reflects the
proportion of holiday weeks to non-holiday weeks throughout the year. The survey dates and sample size
in each week were as follows:
Saturday 13th – Friday 19th September, 2014 (no holidays) – sample of 900 (75%); and
Monday 22nd – Sunday 28th September 2014 (holidays) – sample of 300 (25%).
Other specifications of the survey were as follows:
The questionnaire was designed by Urbis. It was approximately four minutes in duration.
Interviewers were briefed in person by Urbis. Only IQCA accredited interviewers were employed to
undertake the interviews. A field supervisor was on-site for the duration of the survey.
Respondents were screened to include those who were shopping, browsing, getting something to eat
or drink, working, or using a service or facility. People who were only undertaking a recreational
activity or just passing through were excluded from the survey.
Respondents were selected as randomly as possible by approaching every third person passing fixed
points in each precinct.
