PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 9 APRIL 2019

groundsel especially during flowering season would be required to assist with facilitation
of succession by native species. Introduced Cassia is also a problem on site, and this
would need to be managed to avoid future infestation through the remnant. Site 1 had a
different overstorey from the rest of the site with Eucalyptus tereticornis and
Lophostemon suavelons more dominant. The under and midstorey also has more drier
species present. Eucalyptus robusta was not recorded at either site and the understorey
appears to be dependent on soil type and waterlogging. Site 2 is dominated by
Melaleuca overstorey and has rainforest and vine species present, with some rainforest
species occurring in the upper canopy. There is a small lantana problem at the edge of the
forest at the road reserve and management of the road reserve is an issue that will need to
be considered to avoid degradation of the site. The property in general consists of a large
plain of tall Melaleuca forest with a variety of understorey consisting of sedges, ferns,
palms, vines, banksias and rainforest species. There is a large quantity of fallen logs and
ferns, mosses and lichens are abundant. The species diversity in the understorey is
extremely diverse and a key feature of the site. If purchased by Council the site would
lend itself to having an education facility or boardwalk based on wetlands. Potential
partnerships could be forged with education bodies such as Sunshine Coast University,
   Education Queensland and CSIT.
