Park-and-Ride
Consultant Parsons Brinckerhoff (2016) identified Park-and-Ride as a key strategy to manage
traffic demand associated with visitor travel. This would provide day visitors, employees and
residents with a location to park their vehicles before they enter the busy coastal area and
hence reduce congestion and demand on local feeder streets.
To date Noosa Council has trialled temporary Park-and-Ride services during peak times such
as Christmas and Easter by utilising sports grounds and ovals.
In the short term, Council intends to trial expanded Park-and-Ride services during the 2017/18
Christmas/New Year peak holiday period. We are considering the following potential sites:
• Tewantin Sports Complex
• Bicentennial Hall
• Girraween Sports Complex
• Noosa AFL grounds
Other potential sites may be identified at a later date. Council intends to conduct a detailed
study to determine the preferred location, demand, and likely capacity of successful Park-and-
Ride services.
Key features of a successful Park-and-Ride:
• located on main arterial roads on approaches to the busy Noosa coastal area (such as
Cooroy Noosa Rd/Beckman’s Rd, Eumundi Noosa Rd, Eenie Creek Rd, Walter Hay
Dr, David Low Way)
• service with frequent, quality bus links to key destinations (including Noosa Junction,
Hastings Street, Noosa River Foreshore and the beaches)
• security/surveillance, visitor information and a kiosk/cafe may add to the attraction and
usability of the facility
• more affordable and convenient than parking in the congested areas near the beach or
river.
A Park-and-Ride is necessary for Noosa as it is in many other popular small
destinations around the world. Day trippers to Noosa will always be a problem
unless visitors get the message that the town parking is full during holiday periods.
Your Say Respondent
As the facility or facilities will be busiest on weekends when there are more visitors, carparks
could potentially be shared with activities that are busy during weekdays (e.g. service industry,
office, educational facilities) but not with those that are busy on weekends (major retail,
hospitality, major tourist attractions, sporting grounds). Sporting grounds are unlikely to be
suitable as permanent Park-and-Ride sites as they tend to be busy on weekends.
