Predictably, visitation at the NAC was down significantly on prior years due to the centre’s closure.
The 28% reduction in patronage was very similar to the 30% reduction seen in revenue. When
comparing visitation across the period from when the NAC reopened through to 31 December, a
9.8% drop-off remains. Some of this relates to the fact that it took a little while for numbers to ramp
back up following the closure, with the remainder a result of the opening of the St Andrew’s pool.
Recent achievements
The NAC has been able to achieve the following over the past 6 months:
Completion of major capital works projects including full replacement of the centre’s roof and
large deck, regrouting the 50m pool, replacement of wet deck along the edges of the 50m
and leisure pools, upgrades to the centre’s equipotential bonding system and replacement
of the plant room’s switchboards and other minor plant and equipment.
Planning for the upcoming installation of additional rooftop solar panels.
Continued efforts to minimise emissions and use of plastics across the facility.
Hosting of various training squads in the lead up to the 2020 Olympics.
Partnerships with various teams across Council in order to provide some alternative duties
for staff keen to work during the centre’s shutdown. The partnership with Natural Areas was
particularly successful and provided significant benefit to all parties.
Upcoming priorities
The following priorities will be key focuses for management throughout the second half of 2019/20:
Development of 10-year masterplan outlining programing and facility upgrade needs and
opportunities.
Development of a new learn to swim program strategy.
Replacement of one of the 50m pool heat pumps.
Works to light pole foundations in order to facilitate the safe changeover of pool deck lights
to more efficient LEDs.
Extension or renewal of the café and squad coaching contracts currently held by external
operators.
Installation of a further 73 kW of rooftop solar, bringing the size of all systems at the NAC to
100kW.
