LOT 21 (No.16) PINES ROAD, COOROY EBIS REFERENCE NO: 210417-ED SITE ASSESSMENT AND SOIL TESTING FOR ONSITE EFFLUENT DISPOSAL 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 General Information We were commissioned to undertake site assessment and soil testing for an on-site effluent disposal system at 16 Pines Road, Cooroy. Testing and assessment was undertaken on 21 January, 2022. Information on the site conditions was collected and the suitability of the site for effluent disposal was assessed. 2.0 TESTING 2.1 Test Method Two (2) boreholes of 75mm diameter were excavated at the location shown on the attached site sketch. Soils were texturally classified to assess their permeability in accordance with AS/NZS 1547:2012. 2.2 Standards The On-site Domestic Wastewater Management standard AS/NZS 1547:2012 and The On-site Sewerage Code July 2002 produced by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines have been used as the main references for assessing the suitability of this site for the disposal of wastewater. 3.0 FINDINGS 3.1 Proposed Development It is proposed that a new four (4) bedroom home be built on the above allotment. 3.2 Area The allotment has an overall area of approximately 3.874ha. The proposed site layout is shown on the attached site plan A3-210417-ED1. 3.3 Slope The site slope over the area tested is as indicated on the attached site plan. It is proposed that advanced secondary effluent from a house hold treatment plant will be discharged to a covered surface pressure drip irrigation area. 3.4 Geology & Soils The geology of the site is shown as being RLK – Kin Kin beds. The soils are shown as being GRYP – Gravelly red and yellow podzolics. The natural soil profile consists of high plasticity friable silty clay topsoil and high plasticity silty clay with shaley gravels increasing with depth. 3.5 Weather The weather on the day of testing was mostly fine with some showers. It was generally fine with some showers and a storm during the preceding week. PROPOSED NEW RESIDENCE PAGE 1 OF 4 7 February 2022

3.6 Water Table
No water table was encountered in the soil profile.
4.0 CONCLUSIONS
4.1 Soil Classification
The soils were visually and texturally classified. The soils are predominately weakly
structured to massive structured clay loams, overlying moderately structured medium
to heavy clays.
4.2 Soil Properties
Based on the above information and Table M1 from AS/NZS 1547:2012
(Recommended design irrigation rate for irrigation systems), we consider the soil to
have the following properties:
Average Ksat 0.06-0.12m/day
Design Irrigation Rate 3mm/day
4.3 Effluent Quantity
Based on a four (4) bedroom residence the total effluent flow would be
approximately 720L/day calculated from the following:
Number of persons 6
Water supply Tank
Water fixtures Standard
Typical Wastewater Flow 120L/person/day
(From Appendix H Table H1 of AS/NZS 1547:2012 using standard water fixtures)
5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
5.1 Treatment Method
A household treatment plant providing advanced secondary treated effluent is
proposed for this site. This proposed system is designed for a fifteen year life. The
treatment plant should be registered as an approved system with the Department of
Natural Resources.
5.2 Disposal System
A covered surface pressure drip irrigation system on an area of 240m2 should be
installed as shown on the attached drawing A3-210417-ED1. Adequate area exists
onsite for duplication or extension of the irrigation system. Warning signs are to be
placed in the vicinity of the irrigated areas.
5.3 Disposal Area Modifications
We recommend that the disposal area be modified as follows:
1. Removal of vegetation from the site
2. Prepare bed for mulched garden bed.
6.0 MAINTENANCE NOTES
The treatment plant is to be maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s specification.
Some components of the system may need replacement or re-establishment within a fifteen
year period including:

Mechanical and Electrical Equipment
Some pipework and valves
Irrigation areas
The proposed treatment and irrigation system at the above site has been designed for
a maximum flow of 720L/day of normal domestic waste flow. This is equivalent to a
total site population of up to 6 persons with a daily usage of 120L/person/day.
6.1 Description of Process
The onsite treatment plant receives all household sewage waste, consisting of both
black and grey waters.
For the design flow for a 24 hour minimum detention period of the waste should
occur. During this detention period the waste is biologically treated with bacteria with
associated skimming and settling in a regime as designed by the system manufacturer.
The effluent (out flow) from the tank of advanced secondary treatment standard is then
pumped to the irrigation areas.
Further treatment of the effluent occurs at the irrigation area by a combination of
further bacterial decomposition, absorption of water, evaporation, filtering and nutrient
uptake by vegetation and disinfection by natural ultraviolet light.
The wastewater effluent from this process effluent contains a percentage of bacteria,
viruses and protozoa that are potentially harmful to human health. Contact with the
wastewater should therefore be avoided.
6.2 Care & Maintenance of the Effluent Disposal System
The design life for this system is required to be 15 years. Some components of the
system will need to be renewed within this time period, namely:
Pipework and Fittings
Various items of Mechanical Equipment subject to corrosion and wear
Electrical Equipment, pumps and blowers
Filters and Membranes
Irrigation areas and surface pollution control measures
Care and maintenance instructions should be followed on a regular basis in
accordance with the Manufacturers Requirements and with the attached sheets.
If Care and Maintenance of the system is not followed carefully, or abnormal loadings
are imposed, then the treatment system may cease to be a viable onsite effluent
disposal system. If this occurs then the system may need to be modified to better suit
the actual loading and householders commitment to site maintenance.
Biyearly inspections are required by EBIS to verify the performance of your system. At
these inspections the performance of the irrigation areas and the maintenance log
from the treatment plant operator would be evaluated. An ongoing record will be kept
for auditing purposes.
6.3 Items to Avoid in Normal System Use
The following will compromise or seriously impair the functioning of the Treatment
System:
Disposal of newspapers, sanitary napkins, rubber products, nappy liners, cotton
buds, etc. into the system.
Use of an in-sink garbage grinder is not recommended as they can add extra
loading equivalent to about 2 persons.

e Use of strong caustics, acids, alkalis or chemical detergents can damage the
system and cause bad odours.
e Use of disinfectants or other bactericides can kill the active bacteria.
e Placement of grease/fats or food scraps down the kitchen sink can put extra
load on the system. ie. Plates should be scraped reasonably clean prior to
washing up.
e Disposal of used cooking oil or similar material down the sink can cause excess
accumulation of fat in the treatment tank.
6.4 Cleaning Products & Cleaning Hints
Toilet:
Cleaning the bath:
Nappies:
Bleach:
Wash frequency:
Avoid:
Pine-O-Clean or Toilet Duck must only be used in very
limited quantities.
Ajax or similar product may be used if the plug is in the bath and
the bulk of the cleaning material is wiped out with a paper towel
which is later disposed of in the bin. Spray & Wipe can also be
used for this purpose.
Most nappy products are Anti-Bacterial Solution and as such
should not be used.
Should not be used in the system.
Ideally you should do 1-2 loads per day over several days, this
reduces the hydraulic shock loading on the system.
Using showers, washing machines, etc. at the same time, or in
close succession, should be avoided to space out the hydraulic
load.
Most dishwashing detergents are strongly alkaline and should be used in moderation.
When shopping for various cleaners, detergents, toilet paper etc., check the labels to
determine their safety to treatment plant. Failure to comply with these
recommendations can result in problems with your system.
Many products labelled “Safe for Septics” should not adversely affect the system. If you
wish to try a new product and it does not cause smeil problems and the water remains
clear, then it is probably safe to use.
With all cleaning: Do not use excess cleaners or detergents.
