Attachment 5 - Site Assessment and Soil Test for effluent disposal
LOT 21 (No.16) PINES ROAD, COOROY EBIS REFERENCE NO: 210417-ED
Mechanical and Electrical Equipment
Some pipework and valves
Irrigation areas
The proposed treatment and irrigation system at the above site has been designed for
a maximum flow of 720L/day of normal domestic waste flow. This is equivalent to a
total site population of up to 6 persons with a daily usage of 120L/person/day.
6.1 Description of Process
The onsite treatment plant receives all household sewage waste, consisting of both
black and grey waters.
For the design flow for a 24 hour minimum detention period of the waste should
occur. During this detention period the waste is biologically treated with bacteria with
associated skimming and settling in a regime as designed by the system manufacturer.
The effluent (out flow) from the tank of advanced secondary treatment standard is then
pumped to the irrigation areas.
Further treatment of the effluent occurs at the irrigation area by a combination of
further bacterial decomposition, absorption of water, evaporation, filtering and nutrient
uptake by vegetation and disinfection by natural ultraviolet light.
The wastewater effluent from this process effluent contains a percentage of bacteria,
viruses and protozoa that are potentially harmful to human health. Contact with the
wastewater should therefore be avoided.
6.2 Care & Maintenance of the Effluent Disposal System
The design life for this system is required to be 15 years. Some components of the
system will need to be renewed within this time period, namely:
Pipework and Fittings
Various items of Mechanical Equipment subject to corrosion and wear
Electrical Equipment, pumps and blowers
Filters and Membranes
Irrigation areas and surface pollution control measures
Care and maintenance instructions should be followed on a regular basis in
accordance with the Manufacturers Requirements and with the attached sheets.
If Care and Maintenance of the system is not followed carefully, or abnormal loadings
are imposed, then the treatment system may cease to be a viable onsite effluent
disposal system. If this occurs then the system may need to be modified to better suit
the actual loading and householders commitment to site maintenance.
Biyearly inspections are required by EBIS to verify the performance of your system. At
these inspections the performance of the irrigation areas and the maintenance log
from the treatment plant operator would be evaluated. An ongoing record will be kept
for auditing purposes.
6.3 Items to Avoid in Normal System Use
The following will compromise or seriously impair the functioning of the Treatment
System:
Disposal of newspapers, sanitary napkins, rubber products, nappy liners, cotton
buds, etc. into the system.
Use of an in-sink garbage grinder is not recommended as they can add extra
loading equivalent to about 2 persons.
