GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 16 JANUARY 2023
commitment to work with the community, key sectors and other levels of government to build a
shared vision of a climate-ready region.
The Roadmap includes three priority themes with a number of focus areas under each theme as
our next steps to build a climate-ready region. The priority themes are:
1. BUILDING CLIMATE-READY COUNCILS
This theme recognises that building the resilience of our own services to climate hazards is
a core responsibility. Whilst each council operates as a separate organisation, there are
significant benefits from working together to understand our climate risks and identify
opportunities for improved services that deliver better outcomes.
2. EMPOWERING CLIMATE-READY COMMUNITIES
This theme recognises that preparing for a changing climate is everyone’s responsibility, but
everyone needs the motivations, resources, and skills to enable them to prepare. Councils
will continue to lead and support our community to meet their shared responsibilities in
building a climate-ready region.
3. ADVOCATING FOR A CLIMATE-READY REGION
Some of our major local climate risks are created by decisions outside our region and outside
the direct control of our councils. Councils must therefore continue to leverage their regional
alliances to advocate for changes to State and Federal government legislation and policies
that exacerbate local climate risks, and for improved funding for our regional climate change
response.
The project included the following steps:
Community survey
Internal Council staff survey
Information stocktake
Governance assessment
Internal workshop series
External stakeholder roundtables
Cross-leadership workshops
Roadmap development
Subsequent phases of the LGAQ framework include detailed climate risk planning and
understanding of impacts on service delivery (Phase 2) and implementing climate actions (Phase
3).
Policy Alignment
CORPORATE PLAN
This project, and the intended next steps outlined in the Roadmap, align with the Corporate Plan’s
values of community, sustainability and innovation. It also aligns with:
Theme 1, Key Focus Area 7: 'Plan our response to Climate Change’
o 20-year goal: ‘Noosa Shire is better prepared for Climate Change’
Theme 2, Focus 8 'Maintain the ability to respond to disaster events'
o 20-year goal: ‘Council and the Noosa community are resilient in the face of
emergencies and disaster events.’
Theme 3, 20-year goal: ‘Our economy is diverse and resilient’
Theme 4, 20-year goal: ‘Noosa Shire is well-managed and sustainable’
Theme 5, Focus 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 11, and 13.
