Planning a way forward for Cooroy Township
Outcome: The “country town” character of Cooroy is maintained and
reinforced.
Promote Cooroy as a district activity centre servicing the Noosa hinterland and some
T
communities outside the Shire
Retain retail and customer-focused office uses on land with frontage to Maple St, Emerald
F
St, Garnet St, Elm St and Diamond St while ensuring attractive streetscape treatment.
Reinforce Maple Street and Emerald Street as main streets with buildings addressing the
A
street, complementing the traditional built form and incorporating continuous, intimate,
weather protected footpaths. Promote a low speed, people focussed environment in these
R
spaces centred around the intersection of the two roads.
Retain the character area overlay and continue to protect individually significant sites,
D
promoting reuse where appropriate
Promote buildings that complement and are reflective of the traditional building forms in
Cooroy. Outside of the town centre this relies on a relatively low site cover so buildings are
separated by space and mature vegetation.
Promote retail development in the form of small tenancies rather than large floor plates and
drive-through facilities.
Outcome: Cooroy is home to a diverse, inclusive community.
Enhance housing choice by providing for a range of attached housing and smaller dwelling
units located close to the town centre with convenient access to public transport.
Prioritise the safety and comfort of pedestrians in the public realm, particularly in Maple
Street and Emerald Street.
Improve safe and convenient pedestrian and cyclist connections throughout town including
connections to the town centre, community facilities, schools, train station, and sports fields.
Where topography allows, new residential development incorporates through streets
extending the current grid pattern and providing a legible network for pedestrians and
drivers.
