1.0 INTRODUCTION
In accordance with the relevant codes, standards and Noosa Councils’ guidelines,
Unearthed Geotechnical P/L was commissioned to undertake a Site and Soil
Evaluation at
Lot 4 on RP905954 ('26) Little Springs Lane, Lake Macdonald.
The results form the basis of our recommendations for the on-site treatment and
disposal of wastewater from the proposed house and shed on this 7132 square-metre
allotment.
Our site investigation fieldwork was performed on 2/09/2020 after generally fine
weather in the course of the preceding weeks.

2.0 SITE AND SOIL EVALUATION The field and officework undertaken for our site and soil evaluation consisted of _adesk top study in accordance with the regulatory authority a comprehensive assessment to record topography, geography and geology etc the confirmation of expected available areas and delineation of exclusion areas the assessment of site exposure and suitability a detailed subsoil investigation recording characteristics and limitations the determination of Soil Category, Colour, Texture, and Structure the determination of Indicative Drainage and Permeability soil observation boreholes (75-100 mm dia. Jarret style hand augers), the calculation of the Design Loading Rate (DLR) the collation and evaluation of the results from the above studies Se Be Bo Te Ge Be_ Ge Ge Go. Pe (The test locations were not professionally surveyed and should be considered approximate) (All fieldwork performed in accordance with the relevant Australian Standards and Codes) (All boreholes backfilled in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations) The purpose of this site and soil evaluation is to ensure that a suitable on-site sewage treatment plant/Land Application Facility is selected for this particular site. In compiling this report we have assessed the existing and historical parameters to gain a comprehensive overview of the potential for on-site domestic wastewater management. The scale of, and methodology of our site and soil evaluation is considered to be adequate, relative to, and indicative of the size of the facility, having considered the consistent natural soil profile and the availability of suitable land. A full copy of this report and all the accompanying sketches plans details and notes shall be made available to all present and future owners and or occupiers of the proposed house that is to be serviced by this Land Application Facility, and to all contractors/suppliers/installers for quotation and or construction objectives. 3.0 DESIGN DETERMINATION We have determined the soil to have the following characteristics Borehole Nos 3&4 Depth (mm) 0 - 200 Soil Category 5 Indicative Drainage Poor Structure Strong Texture ; Light Clay Indicative Permeability P (metres/day) as Kat 0.12 - 0.5 For our calculations we have assessed the design flow as follows DLR (mm/day) (Advanced Enviro-septic™ effluent) 5-8 Hydraulic load (litres/day/person) 120 Design flow Q (litres/day) (equivalent population 5 people) 600 Total System Footprint (m’) =75 Septic Tank minimum size requirement (litres) 3000 Advanced Enviro-septic™ System Note — AS/NZS 1547-2012 (Appendix H, Table H1) lists the typical wastewater design flow allowance for households with an on-site roof water tank supply as 120-litres/person/day (all wastes). With the installation of standard water reduction fixtures the design flow can be reduced substantially. Note — In this instance we have used the maximum DLR of 8 mm/day due to the very highly structured nature of the Category 5 soil recorded in BH 3 and that we recorded Category 4 soil in BH 4. Where the design flow ‘Q’, nominated above, is exceeded the area (Ai) may need to be increased accordingly. This sewerage system is not suitable for accepting waste from garbage grinders. 4.0 FINDINGS All the field information and test results collected during our site investigation and detailed in this report, including any site plans, log and data sheets together form the basis of our recommendations for this Land Application Facility. The soil profile encountered during our investigations, and as reported, was reasonably and acceptably consistent across the proposed development, and within our expectations from regional experience and correlation with The Qld Dept of Mines/Energy Geology Sheet 9445/1999 (Gympie). The Qld Dept Mines/Energy Geology Sheet 9445/1999 describes the geology as Late Triassic-Jurassic, Duckinwilla Group, Myrtle Creek Sandstone. The proposed Land Application Area is on a partially exposed 15-20% southeastern slope with neighbouring vegetation consisting of grasses and trees. ~ The landform was recorded as natural and partially disturbed. Slope configuration across the proposed site is determined to be linear planar. Slope stability problems were not evident during our investigations and expert evaluation deemed unnecessary. The susceptibility to flooding from groundwater is low and the indicative drainage was recorded as imperfect to poor. No water table was encountered on the day of our site investigation. . Cobbles and/or boulders in soil profiles are sometimes common and unfortunately we cannot predict their size or frequency. It has also been our experience that these floaters can be extremely difficult to excavate with conventional equipment. Unearthed Geotechnical P/L. 4 Design Report 020-212
Page 6
4.1 Limitations Our site and soil evaluation noted the following limitations which may have an adverse effect on the performance, serviceability, and sustainability of environmentally acceptable on-site domestic wastewater management + allotment size, configuration and topographic idiosyncrasies e — separation distance requirements « areas where geological factors may result in effluent emergence ¢ areas of excessive slope e areas required for construction or landscaping In formulating our recommendations we have noted, considered and made allowance for the effect these limitations will have on the performance, serviceability, and sustainability of on-site domestic wastewater management. We consider that in line with the recommendations set out within this report, and with appropriate control measures in position, sustainable on-site domestic wastewater treatment and disposal will be achieved. In consideration of these limitations and with reference to the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code and AS/NZS1547-2012 On-site Domestic Wastewater Management, we recommend advanced secondary treatment of all domestic wastewater flows for the efficient, sustainable and environmentally acceptable disposal of treated effluent on this allotment. The use of such approved advanced secondary treatment systems consequentially enables the 30m horizontal separation distance from the intermittent watercourses/dams to be reduced to 10m, and the vertical separation distance to be reduced to 300mm. Although we recorded no existing evidence of eutrification, we believe there is the potential for eutrification of any associated dam or watercourse if there is nutrient leakage from any disposal site. However, with our recommended, and appropriate vegetation planting, with the incorporation of a wastewater treatment system with nutrient stripping capabilities and with the encouraged use of phosphate free cleaning products, we believe the reduced potential will be contained. Unearthed Geotechnical P/L. 5 Design Report 020-212
Page 7
5.0 DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS We recommend the installation of an Advanced Enviro-septic™ domestic wastewater system to treat the domestic wastewater to a secondary or advanced secondary quality. We recommend the installation of a 3000 litre (min capacity) all-waste septic tank to treat the domestic wastewater to primary quality (it should be noted that the local regulatory authority may have larger minimum size requirements than those recommended). The final location of the septic tank will be determined on-site by variable consequences (e.g. finished floor levels, distances, allotment configuration and topographical constraints) over which we have little control. This final placement may necessitate the use of a pump and pump well to enable the Land Application Area to be located above the septic tank. Notwithstanding the final location of the septic tank and the Land Application Area particular attention should be paid to protecting any, or all pipework below driveways, access tracks, or such trafficable areas. The treated effluent is to be dosed into and along the Advanced Enviro-septic™ pipes. Thus receiving treated effluent and residuals in a manner and at a rate that enables their further treatment by natural in-soil stabilisation processes so that the resulting clarified carriage water is environmentally and hygienically acceptable for groundwater infiltration or evaporation and plant transpiration into the atmosphere. Pump systems (if required) shall e have a storage capacity equal to 50% of the daily flow allowance, and sufficient to match the electrical starting requirements of the irrigation pump motor e have performance characteristics that match the hydraulic characteristics of the irrigation system * have a discharge of at least 50% greater than the maximum 30-minute flow rate have a visual and audible alarm system (with muting ability) for breakdown notification e not be located adjacent to bedrooms, living rooms or recreational areas of neighbouring properties e be contained in an acoustic chamber to reduce noise emission of all equipment to a level not exceeding 40 dB (measured as fast response at a distance of 1.0m), e have incorporated into the facility pressure and/or velocity reduction fittings installed sufficiently distant above the Advanced Enviro-septic™ piping. The installed system will need capped 100mm diameter sampling ports accessible above ground to enable analysis or the performance of the system according to requirements in effect. The installed system will need Oxygen Demand Vents, as per the Advanced Enviro- septic™ requirements. Oxygen Demand Vents ensure air is drawn completely through the Advanced Enviro-septic™ piping. Unearthed Geotechnical P/L. 6 Design Report 020-212
Page 8
Our recommendations do not preclude other or additional Land Application Facilities. Wastewater Treatment Systems and Land Application Facilities should be designed to remove as much nitrogen as possible by ammonification, settlement in sludge, denitrification, long residence times or plant uptake. Water conservation implementation will reduce the hydraulic load on the Land Application Facility and subsequently improve its performance and serviceable life. Effluent quality from the treatment plant must comply with the criteria presented in the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code and AS/NZS 1547-2012 On-site Domestic Wastewater Management and be confirmed with the regulatory authority. Unearthed Geotechnical P/L. 7 Design Report 020-212
Page 9
5.1 Installation Notes All installation works, components and fittings must comply with AS/NZS 1547- 2012 On-site Domestic Wastewater Management, and the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code, and the local authority. All installation works, components and fittings must comply with Advanced Enviro-septic™ design & installation manual. The Advanced Enviro-septic™ pipes must be stored and installed adequately to prevent contamination of the fabric. Soils are susceptible to damage during the construction and installation processes. The natural integrity of the existing soil conditions of the Land Application Area must be preserved at all stages of the proposed development. Damage to the existing soil profile must be avoided. The laying of the system sand and sand bed extension must occur immediately after excavation. The laying of the system sand and particularly the sand bed extension must be performed without compaction by wheeled vehicles or machinery. This facility must not be constructed or installed during or immediately after periods of wet weather and water must not be allowed to enter the excavation during construction. When excavating for the Advanced Enviro-septic™ pipes excavate in small bites using a bucket fitted with ripper teeth to preserve the permeability characteristics of the natural soil. Scarify/rake all smeared excavated surfaces. We recommend ripping the base of the entire excavation, along the contour and parallel to the lay of pipes, to a depth 200mm before backfilling with sand. We recommend the application of dolomite/gypsum at a nominal rate when preparing the existing soil. This will assist with both plant growth and pH control (further applications may be required during the serviceable life of the Land Application Area). Particular care should be taken with the layout and construction of supply line trenching/pipework, as with all drainage, plumbing and electrical trenches to inhibit surface water infiltration along and into the Land Application Area. If necessary all supply line excavations and trenching shall be backfilled with interceptors. Particular care should also be taken with the layout and construction of the Land Application Area trenching/pipework so that released effluent cannot travel back along trenching causing excessive soil moisture in some areas. As with all effluent disposal in Land Application Areas, the release of effluent along the contours (i.e. level) is both elementary and critical to achieve efficient spread and even disposal. The trenches/beds must be constructed level. Correct pipe layout and Land Application Area construction/installation is an essential part of our recommendations and design. If the site is not prepared in accordance with our design, or is prepared inadequately or is prepared poorly, inefficiencies may occur and we do not take responsibility for the consequences in such cases and we will make an additional charge if as a result, more testing, re-designing or re-writing of the report is necessary. Page 10
Noosa Council may require an inspection for certification to be carried out before final approval can be issued. Unearthed Geotechnical P/L recommends an inspection for certification be carried out by the designer prior to commissioning, and preferably during construction, to ensure code compliance and that ‘best practice’ principles have been utilised. As with all use of sand or distribution aggregate for wastewater treatment and disposal it is very important to restrict the ingress of finer particles to maintain the integrity of the expected performance outcomes of the sand or distribution aggregate. To this end Unearthed Geotechnical P/L suggests the entire bed of sand or distribution aggregate be covered in an appropriate and approved geotextile fabric to restrict such ingress of finer soil particles. This will help to maintain the expected performance outcomes of the sand or distribution aggregate. Without the use of an appropriate and approved geotextile fabric it is probable that the integrity of the sand or distribution aggregate will likely be compromised. The treatment plant/ tanks traps and associated fittings shall be « constructed of durable materials with expandable and/or flexible connections, * positioned correctly in relation to boundaries, buildings etc to provide an angle of repose of at least 30 degrees between the bottom of the footing system/excavation and the base of any associated excavation watertight and capable of withstanding loads imposed on the roof and walls installed so that flotation will not occur when the tank/s is empty installed on a stable base and to prevent surface water infiltration. located with good clear access for servicing and desludging operations located within a designated area to enhance its amenity be protected from roof water/tank discharge, surface water flow and/or seepage installed and operated in accordance with regulatory guidelines. The supply lines to the septic tank must be adequately vented with mosquito proof cowls fitted to all vents. The Land Application Area shall « not be located on land prone to water logging or subject to floodwater inundation « be sited to be open to prevailing winds and not totally shaded from sunlight « be protected from roof water discharge, surface water flow and/or seepage e have no runoff or seepage of the applied effluent beyond the designated area ¢ be regularly inspected and maintained e have the mandatory signage prominently displayed ¢ have boundaries (fence) to deter grazing animals and casual pedestrian traffic As the slope configuration was recorded to be linear planar the Land Application Area shall be protected from surface water infiltration by the installation of an excavated surface water diversion drain (suggested minimum 1000mm wide and 150mm deep) and from runoff by the installation of a vegetated track rolled retention moundAranspiration buffer zone (suggested minimum 1000mm wide and 150mm high). Unearthed Geotechnical P/L. 9 Design Report 020-212
Page 11
In this instance the existing vegetation, extending more than 30m downslope of the proposed Land Application Area may be deemed to be satisfactory as the recommended transpiration buffer zone. It is essential that all associated stormwater flows from this and neighbouring allotments, driveways, roads, tanks and roofs are diverted away and well clear of the proposed Land Application Area by proper final grade of the finished surface. We recommend the base of the entire excavation and the existing ground immediately downslope of the AES trench (approximately 1m) shall be ripped, along the contour and parallel to the lay of pipes, to a depth of 200mm prior to the construction of the AES installation, whilst adding dolomite/gypsum at nominal rate of 0.5 kg/sqm. During the excavation processes we recommend separation of the grey/brown topsoil (to be spread over the top of the entire installation to facilitate grass growth) from the orange/brown/grey subsoil which is used to backfill the sand bed. We further recommend a minimum depth of cover at the low side of the sand bed extension of 300mm. 5.2 Planting Regime Plantings improve the efficiency of the system with the uptake of nutrient and natural transpiration processes. Further qualified advice from local nurserymen and the local regulatory authority should be preférred when choosing plants that may be more or less suitable or acceptable to your region. Grasses should be kept well mown and raked for better evaporative and transpiration processes (avoid throwing grass clippings onto the Land Application Area). Shrubs should be kept well pruned for better evaporative and transpiration processes. Endemic vegetation must be retained and/or reinstated. Following the site preparation, installation and pre-commissioning tests the Land Application Area shall be allowed to revegetate with sufficient appropriate shallow rooting grasses. Unearthed Geotechnical P/L recommends further assessment regarding planting requirements be sought prior to, or at the time of installation of the Land Application Facility. It may be necessary to implement an additional planting regime. Do not plant shrubs or trees within the surface water diversion drains, as these drains need to be kept free of obstruction and trash for maximum diversion efficiency. We recommend the application of dolomite/gypsum at a nominal rate (say 0.5 kg/sqm) to the entire basal area, when preparing the existing soil. This will assist with both plant growth and/or pH control. Further applications may be required during the serviceable life of the Land Application Area. 5.3. Separation Distance Requirements.
One of the most important parameters to consider in the location of Land Application
Areas is the separation distances, both vertical and horizontal. Poorly or
inappropriately selected ground may contribute to the pollution of surface water and
groundwater, ponding and eutrification.
