6 A NALYSIS OF 2022 & 2025 T REE D ATA
6.1 V INE E NCROACHMENT C HANGE
Across the whole site, the Frangipani vine is having a negative effect. It is negatively impacting
the health and structural condition of the mature trees while preventing and smothering young
and emerging natives. This vine uses the smaller diameter understory trees as a climbing
frame to enter the mature trees before cascading through them, reducing their ability to
function. This has resulted in an overall increase in the number of ‘Questionable’ and
‘Redundant’ trees throughout the site. These numbers were recorded in the August 2024
assessment and updated again during the status review in March 2025; the presence of the
vine was again visually increased, and emphasis was placed on the trees that were defunct
or decreasing in health and retainability.

Initially, the Vine was recorded as impacting 149 of the 242 trees within the site. This included
monkey rope vine in some of the 38 trees outside the scope of the 204 trees in the 2024
reassessment. When corrected for this, the figures showed an increase from 145 Frangipani
Vine-affected trees to 184, or an increase from 71% to 90% of the trees influenced by the
Frangipani Vine.

The trees that received a ‘Questionable’ status in the review are those that have become
engulfed in vine to the point that a reliable assessment could not be made. It is anticipated
that, without intervention, many of these trees that could be retained would succumb to the
vine and become dead or dysfunctional over the next few years. These trees can be
reevaluated following vine management and remediation work.

This is further addressed in the section on Health and Structural Change from the 2025
assessment.
