I own an apartment at Noosa River Quays in Blakesley St, Tewantin. While I welcome an upgrade to the
Royal Mail Hotel, I request the following be considered:
PARKING: Noosa Plan 2020 stipulates 183 car parking spaces are required, yet the Royal Mail
Development Application stated only 53 onsite, later apparently updated to 80. This constitutes a
significant shortfall, especially given the size and scope of the development. Noosa Council must insist
on the Applicant’s adherence to the Noosa Plan’s required number of onsite car parking spaces to
ensure that the Tewantin township, most especially the residents of Blakesley Street, are not adversely
affected. There is already limited parking in Blakesley Street, thus inadequate provision of onsite parking
at the renovated Royal Mail Hotel will create mayhem for residents, visitors and patrons alike.
TRAFFIC & SECURITY: The Blakesley Street entry and exit points for the carpark are a concern as the
increased traffic will significantly impact residents who live in the apartment complexes along this street.
We already confront a potentially treacherous issue with hooning, especially from cars doing “wheelies”
as they leave the Woolworth’s carpark and children/teenagers skateboarding and bike riding down the
road from Diyan Street to Ward Park. Additional traffic created by the exit point from the renovated Royal
Mail Hotel will exacerbate this problem significantly. At a recent information evening, we were told by
Yvette Neilson, GM Development, Australian Venue Co, that because the Blakesley Street entry and exit
points already exist, this will not be a problem. However, the monumental increase in traffic once the
development is complete suggests that Blakesley Street will be severely impacted. One way or the other,
frequent security checks which include traffic management must be implemented.
NOISE: Noosa Council must ensure the noise level is kept within the legal decibel limit and that music is
directed away from Blakesley Street, which is a residential area. We have been told that regular
specialist checks will occur, however we need assurance they will take place, and supervision to ensure
they do.
CORNER LOT DIYAN & BLAKESLEY STREETS: There seems to be no definitive plans for this corner
lot which is of some concern to nearby residents. We need confirmation relating to the way in which it will
be utilised.
APPEARANCE & LANDSCAPING: Mature landscaping must be installed and maintained from the outset
to diminish any harsh appearance of the renovated structure which would be detrimental to Tewantin
Village ambience. The Royal Mail’s revised facade should also receive considerable attention as the
existing plans indicate an exterior that does not enhance the Hotel’s heritage characteristics.
