THREE-MONTH TRIAL OF ALTERNATE SHARK MITIGATION MEASURES DURING SOUTHERN WHALE MIGRATION · Attachment 5 to the Minutes dated 22-01-2026 - Letter to Minister from Mayor dated 20 Sep 2025 - QLD Shark Management
20 November 2025
Hon Tony Perrett MP
Minister for Primary Industries
Department of Primary Industries

Dear Minister Perrett
TRIAL SHARK NET REMOVAL DURING WHALE MIGRATION SEASON
Further to earlier correspondence regarding the Queensland Shark Management Plan, I wish to
advise you of the result of Noosa Council’s motion presented at the LGAQ Annual Conference in
October.
The motion outlined below was carried by an overwhelming majority vote of 204 to 7, demonstrating
strong state-wide support from Queensland councils for such a trial:
LGAQ Motion #92 - Trial of Non-Lethal Shark Mitigation Measures During Whale
Migration Period
That the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) calls on
the State Government to modernise Queensland’s Shark Control Program by working
in partnership with interested coastal councils to trial non-lethal, evidence-based shark
mitigation technologies such as drone surveillance, sonar detection systems, and SMART
drumlines, specifically during the annual whale migration period.
I acknowledge and respect your correspondence (CTS 17878/25) noting the State’s current priority
initiatives, including the year-round use of shark nets and drumlines and the Department’s expertise
in releasing whales entangled in program gear.
In light of the near-unanimous support for this motion, I respectfully offer evidence of wide-spread
support for a trial of non-lethal shark mitigation measures during the whale migration period.
I understand Noosa is the only location that has so far requested this and remains open to any trial
during the next whale migration season, should you wish to test alternative measures.
Yours sincerely
Cr Frank Wilkie
