Representative LA90 background noise levels were measured adjacent to each of the nearest
receivers as indicated in Figure 12. Six background noise levels were measured due to the primary
noise source in the local area being surf crashing onto the nearby beach, which attenuated as a line
source away from the coastline.
During the background measurements the pause facility on the sound level meter was used to
exclude extraneous noise such as vehicle pass-bys on nearby roads and people on foot passing by.
The measurement results are presented in Table 4. The levels measured at 10:00pm for Background
2, 3 and 4 were found to be influenced by music and patron noise from the Sum Yung Guys
Restaurant. Due to the measured background levels being influenced by constant surf noise, the
midnight levels have been used in the derivation of the before 10:00pm and after 10:00pm source
levels.
