Details of Submission I (We), make the following submission: My family are Noosa Heads locals for over 25years. We are against the Noosa Civic Expansion and for many reasons. The Noosa Civic increase in shops will come at a cost to local businesses. Already in Noosa Junction, Hasting St, Noosaville and in Noosa Civic itself there are many vacant shops. Noosa Civic hasn’t filled up all it’s existing shops. So the demand for tenants must not be there. This is an oversupply of vacant shops in our area. Noosa prides itself on a point of difference, tourists want to shop at boutique shops that they cannot access from home. Those who like to shop in malls are the people who have a minimum budget spend. Do we need to cater for this audience? Having super discount stores and more supermarkets is an oversautaion of the market. This is not part of the Noosa image, nor the biosphere/green image Noosa has. Cheap Chinese imports is not what we need to promote, budget Chinese clothing and goods is not what Noosa wants or needs. Guests like to shop whilst on holidays, but if you did a survey you’d find that guests want something different and unique. The Civic doesn’t offer this as it caters to the large chains. As I write this a small independent shop that is in Civic is closing down as they cannot afford the exubent rents the Civic charge. This mega mall offers cheap rent and then ups it. By them expanding they will force the other business out and we will have even more empty shops. The Civic is too far out of Noosa for tourists to access. From a locals point of view, we don’t need more discount superstores, we don’t need myer or David Jones and if locals want to shop there, a quick trip to Maroochydore is fun. Myer and David Jones do NOT offer anything more than what we have already available in the many local shops in our immediate region. To allow a cinema in the Noosa Civic will effectively close the Noosa 5 Cinemas which are stuggling. We already have Big W there and enough shops to service more than the current population. On an environmental level, the Noosa Civic is a very ugly unappealing structure, they could have made it quite beautiful and taking in all the flora and fauna on the land it inhibits. It’s poor planning, concrete structure with no positive energy. It drags down Noosa’s image. It is a cold and uninviting concrete box with no warmth or design savy. I avoid it at all costs. This is against the Noosa Plan. Every local that I speak to about this is against this expansion. There are 2 things Noosa, Tewantin and Noosaville don’t need more of: shops and restaurants. Both are struggling to make business work and most owners are working many hours to avoid closure. To make this a fair competitive environment Noosa Council must protect local business owners and cap these developments owned by companies that are not local.
