An increased focus on environmental sustainability saw
some key successes with the 2019 Festival. $7,453 was raised
for Trees for Tourism and we diverted 1.3 tonnes of waste from
landfill to compost, three times the amount from last year’s
Festival. Our partnership with Plastic Free Noosa continued
with a goal to eliminate single-use plastics – virtually all were
eliminated from the Festival. Our Waste Warriors educated
Festival Village visitors and 4,190 refundable containers went
to the Cash for Containers scheme.
Food sustainability was also a theme with many of our
events and masterclasses putting the spotlight on sustainable
practices, reducing food waste and using local produce in
season. We partnered with OzHarvest and local Ambassador
Cameron Matthews utilised the surplus food from the Festival
to create a brunch menu for our Industry Day on the final
day of the Festival.

We introduced Trees for Tourism, a new sustainability
initiative in partnership with our event partners and Noosa
& District Landcare. Trees for Tourism supports tree planting
through our shire for land rehabilitation, carbon emission
reduction and the protection and enhancement of koala habitat.
The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sports Festival and the Noosa Food
& Wine Festival were the first two events contributing to this,
raising over $13,000. Moving forward all events sponsored
by Tourism Noosa will contribute $1 for every event participant.
Many of our members also regularly donate at local industry
events and visitors are able to donate via the
Visitor Information Centre.
