2015/16
Foreword from the Chair of the Noosa Local Disaster Management Group
Severe weather events, flooding and bushfires are part of life in Noosa. These severe
weather events do not respect local government boundaries, and as we know from the last
few years, they can severely affect our community and economic life.
So history tells us that we need to be prepared and ‘Get Ready’ for these events.
The Noosa Local Disaster Management Plan 2015/16 (The Plan) is based upon the
principles contained in the Queensland Disaster Management Act 2003. It takes an all
hazards approach to disaster events, and details our commitment to building resilient
communities by developing and implementing specific strategies to prevent, prepare for,
respond to and recover from a disaster.
It also identifies actions to ensure an effective and coordinated response to a disaster -how
we support our local communities and the ways we facilitate speedy recovery and return to a
safe and secure environment following a disaster.
The Plan integrates federal and state disaster management arrangements and details how
the Sunshine Coast District Group can best provide assistance to us as, and when, required.
The Plan’s primary focus is to ensure the safety of our communities. It aims to preserve life
and prevent injury, to mitigate property damage, and to protect our environment.
Noosa Shire Council would also ask that residents personally play a part by talking about
what they would do in an emergency with their families, their friends and their staff (if
applicable), developing their own emergency plan and regularly maintaining the vegetation
and drainage around their properties. It pays to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Finally, on behalf of the community, I would like to thank all the volunteers, emergency
service and council staff, who during a disaster, are out there working to ensure our
community is safe, often in very difficult and dangerous conditions.
