(a) automatically apply the brakes and disable the accelerator when the bus is stationary
and the doors are not fully closed or the ramp is not fully retracted;
(b) maintain the sensitivity of the door sensitive edges for only 5 seconds after the doors
are closed;
(c) apply high pressure to the door system once the speed sensing device is activated or
after 6 seconds, whichever occurs first. High pressure is then to be maintained until
the door open button is activated by the driver;
(d) be fitted with a driver operated over ride switch. It shall activate a buzzer when in
operation, be required to be continuously held whilst in operation and designed so
that a weight cannot be placed on top of it to activate it. The purpose is to allow a
vehicle that has stopped because the interlocks have activated to be able to be
moved to a safe stopping location; and
(e) centre and rear doors shall have an anti-trapment system fitted to prevent a
passenger from being trapped in the door whilst in the opening cycle. On detecting a
trapment situation the doors shall go to zero pressure until they are reset by the driver
controls.
Anti-lock Brakes:
An ABS or equivalent anti-lock braking system shall be provided.
Hand Brake Warning Device:
A hand brake warning device (HBWD), as fitted to the existing fleet, shall be fitted. The
HBWD will activate an audible and visual warning to the driver if he attempts to leave the
driving position without activating the hand brake. The HBWD shall have a sensor beam to
the left of the driver which is active when the hand brake is not applied. If the sensor beam is
broken the system shall activate a red flashing light above the front door and an audible
warning buzzer to alert the driver to apply the hand brake. The alarm shall continue until the
hand brake is applied. The system shall remain active for at least 20 minutes after the bus
electrical system is shut down and shall be disabled once the vehicle reaches a speed of
about 10 km/hr to prevent false alarms while a bus is travelling at speed.
The sensor beam shall be located at least 300 mm above the floor to prevent the driver from
easily stepping over the beam. A decal shall be affixed next to the red flashing light stating “If
Light Flashing Check Park Brake”.
Suspension system:
A full air suspension fitted with dampers and providing a constant height irrespective of load
shall be provided. “Kneeling” provision shall be incorporated.
Each bus shall be prevented from moving with the suspension “Kneeling” and shall be
prevented from “Kneeling” while moving.
The suspension shall incorporate a “Raising” facility to raise the bus over obstructions.
Each bus shall be restricted to moving at a maximum speed of nominally 10 km/h with the
suspension in the “Raise” condition. If the “Raise”' setting is operated while the bus is moving
at a speed greater than 20 km/h, it shall not activate until the bus has slowed down to 10
km/h.
