2 FORECASTS AND WARNINGS 2.1 Overview Monitoring the weather forecasts and warnings will be the most important step in managing the flood risk of the site. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecasts rainfall maps which can be used to estimate the daily amount of rain expected to fall for the next 5 days through the Forecast Rainfall feature on their website (http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/watl/rainfall/pme.jsp). In addition to this, the BoM’s MetEye service can provide 3 hourly rainfall total estimates up to 24 hours in advance (http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/meteye/). Real-time rainfall intensity data is available through the BoM weather radar service. The Gympie (Mt Kanigan) Radar provides coverage for the Noosa River catchment, which is available on their website (http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR083.loop.shtml#skip). The BoM also provide weather warnings for severe weather events which may lead to flooding, which can be located on their website (http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/warnings/) and are distributed and re-broadcast through various media including radio. 2.2 Rainfall Gauges There are also a number of rainfall and creek level gauges within the Noosa River catchment. The rain gauges show the amount of rainfall which has fallen in the preceding 1 hour, 3 hour and 24 hour time periods, and the creek level gauges provide real-time information on water levels within the waterways. The location of the Rainfall gauges in relation to the site and the wider catchment is illustrated in Figure 3-1. Due to the nature of flooding behaviour at the site, the rainfall gauges and BoM forecasts rainfall maps will provide the most useful flood warning information for the site, particularly the Tewantin (RSL) Rainfall gauge will provide rainfall coverage of most interest which is available on their website (http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ60801/IDQ60801.94570.shtml).
