4.0 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION
4.1 Fieldwork
The investigation fieldwork was carried out on 22 December 2022, comprising two test pits (designated TP1
and TP2) and two dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) tests (designated DCP1 and DCP2).
Test pits were excavated with a 5.5-tonne excavator, fitted with a 450 mm toothed bucket and ripper
attachment. DCP tests were also carried out adjacent to the test pits.
The fieldwork was carried out in the presence of a geotechnical engineer from Core, who logged the
subsurface conditions in accordance with Australian Standard AS1726-2017 Geotechnical site
investigations.
Test locations were recorded in the field using a handheld GPS unit and are shown on the attached Figure 1.
Test Pit and DCP reports are attached in Appendix A, together with photographs and explanatory notes.
Subsurface conditions are discussed in Section 5.3.
5.0 RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION
5.1 Published Geological Information
Published information 1 indicates that the site is underlain by middle Triassic age Kin Kin beds comprising
‘strongly cleaved and commonly kinked mudstone with thin siltstone laminae; minor volcanilithic sandstone’.
The site is adjacent to an area underlain by Tertiary age Basalt comprising ‘Mostly olivine basalt flows and
some plugs; some areas of nephelinite, basanite etc’. An extract of the geological map is shown in Image 3.
The subsurface conditions encountered in the test pits (described below) generally confirm the published
geology.
