2.3.1 Vegetation Hazard Class 8 – Acacia communities
Vegetation Hazard Class 8 (VHC 8) is present in the northern portion of the site and within the 100m
buffer to the site. This community exhibits an average canopy height of 8m – 10m with an average
projective foliage canopy cover of 30% – 40%. The community was dominated by Acacia disparrima
(hickory wattle) with areas of dense understory of Lantana camara and exotic grass species. Other
areas of VHC 8 north of the site were host to a rainforest understorey. Plate 6 depicts typical
conditions within VHC 8 (centerground of images), which is described by Leonard et al. (2014) as
having a potential fuel load of 10 t/ha.

2.3.2 Vegetation Hazard Class 12 – Mixture of rural classes – mainly grassland
Vegetation Hazard Class 12 (VHC 12) is present throughout the site and the buffer area. The
vegetation in this hazard class comprises high density exotic grass species including Setaria
sphacelata (South African pigeon grass) with lower density Acacia species present and intermittent
trees also present. VHC 12 is described by Leonard et al. (2014) as having a potential fuel load of 5
t/ha. Plate 6 depicts typical conditions within VHC 12.

2.3.3 Vegetation Hazard Class 16 – Mixture of urban classes
Vegetation Hazard Class 16 (VHC 16) is present associated with areas surrounding existing
dwellings and generally comprises regularly maintained lawn and residential gardens with low
density woody vegetation. VHC 16 is described by Leonard et al. (2014) as having a potential fuel
load of 3 t/ha. Plate 7 depicts typical conditions within VHC 16.
