5.0 FIELD BUSHFIRE HAZARD ASSESSMENT
5.1 Methodology
Methodology was generally based on established best practice Bushfire Management
Guidelines.
5.2 Site Assessment
Duke Environmental performed a Site Assessment on 19 October 2015 for
approximately two (2) hours over the site and adjoining Precinct F (Lot 7).
Methodology employed was aimed at providing a field based assessment of the site in
terms of bushfire hazard, relevant to the proposal. The site was assessed, generally
against the following criteria:
Estimated Fuel Load (t/ha);
Slope;
Aspect; and
Vegetation.
5.2.1 Estimated Fuel Load (t/ha)
Fuel loads were estimated within the various vegetation communities present
on the site. Methodology employed has been adopted from the South East
Queensland Biodiversity Consortium Fire Management Operation Manual
2002 (FMOM). Table 5.1 below summarises estimated fuel loads adopted for
vegetation on the site.
Table 5.1
Estimated Fuel Loads
Equivalent
Vegetation Equivalent Fuel
Component Fuel Load*
Community Hazard Rating
(t/ha)
Bark High 2
Open Forest Elevated Moderate 0
RE 12.2.5 Surface High 10
Combined High 12
* Refer Section 6.1 for fuel hazard assessment details
Although the level of leaf litter (surface fuel) varied throughout the site, a “high”
fuel hazard rating has been applied as a conservative measure.
5.2.2 Slope
The site assessment confirms the general details of the desktop assessment
regarding slope. The site was observed with topography generally analogous
with Rolling Hills (>10% to 20%) on the site and Undulating (>5% to 10%) to
Rolling Hills (>10% to 20%) on adjoining Lot 7.
5.2.3 Aspect
Site assessment confirms that the building envelope is characterised by a
westerly aspect.
