Additional Projects
Noosa specific model development 2019
Previous year's core funding has enabled HLW to build a coupled three dimensional hydrodynamic and
water quality model for the Noosa estuary. The model has recently received a major upgrade to include
improved sediment resuspension predictions for the lakes and better nutrient dynamics predictions.
However, it still requires a modest amount of field work to enable it to be fully calibrated for the unusual
salinity dynamics experienced in the Noosa Estuary.
Field data is required to provide base data for full model calibration and validation. We would deploy
two water quality instruments (fully submersible conductivity, temperature and depth sensors) in Weyba
Ck and Noosa River. The instruments would remain in situ for a period of approximately five weeks, and
would measure and record water levels, conductivity (pre-cursor for salinity) and temperature. During
this period the tidal currents and flows would also be measured in the entrance to Weyba Creek over a
full 13 hour tidal cycle on two separate occasions, namely a large (spring) range tide and a small (neap)
range tide. Tidal flows and currents would be measured using a vessel mounted Acoustic Doppler
Current Profiler (ADCP) instrument. Bathymetry (depth) measurements will also be collected
opportunistically from the tidal reaches of the creek based upon echo sounding cross and long sections
undertaken at the times of deployment and recovery of the tide recorders.
The fee for this project is an additional $30,000 to Noosa Council's core funding. The work can be
completed by June 2020.
