The trade area’s key points of difference with these benchmarks are:
The age profile for the whole trade area is older than that of the Sunshine Coast or
Queensland, with a significant (20.1%) part of the population aged 65+, compared
to 13.1% for Queensland.
Couples without Children make up a higher proportion of families, particularly in
the Cooroy West area (40%) compared to Queensland (28%). However, couples
with children in the Cooroy West area also make up a higher proportion (31%) of
family types than in Cooroy East and is on par with the Queensland profile,
reflecting significantly lower proportions of single parent and lone person
households in Cooroy West.
Average household income ($65,829) is lower than for the Sunshine Coast
($71,406) and Queensland ($83,037). It is higher in the Cooroy West area
($73,607) reflecting a higher average number of employed persons per household
compared to the Sunshine Coast.
These characteristics point to a lower average household spend on retail goods and
services, with a propensity to spend proportionately more on food and convenience
goods, and less on apparel and comparison household goods.
3.4 Household Retail Spending Potential
Average retail expenditure levels for households in the trade area were derived using
average household income data based upon the 2011 Census, the ABS 2009-10
Household Expenditure Survey and National and State Accounts data. Dollar values were
inflated to common December 2013 values using Brisbane Consumer Price Index data.
Household retail expenditures consist of five broad categories:
Take home food – which includes food expenditure at supermarkets, grocery
stores, greengrocers, butchers, bakers, tobacconists, delis and bottle shops;
Meals out and take away food – including restaurants, takeaways, cafes and
coffee shops;
Apparel – clothing and footwear, including clothing hire services;
