The NBC employment precinct (as defined in Figure 3) contains an estimated 4,620 jobs
(based on 2021 Census data) across a wide range of industries, with key economic
clusters in the following sectors:
•    1,110 jobs in manufacturing, construction services, wholesale trade and transport and
     warehousing
•    1,010 jobs in shopping-centre based retail (ie excluding motor vehicle sales) and
     incorporating cafés and restaurants
•    730 jobs in health care and social assistance (incorporating the medical precinct on
     Goodchap Street including Noosa Hospital)
•    600 jobs in service sectors such as professional, scientific and technical services,
     administration, finance and insurance, real estate services, public administration and
     information media and telecommunications
•    400 jobs in education and training.

The NBC employment precinct accounts for 20% of the total number of jobs located
within Noosa Shire, and has relative concentrations in wholesaling (containing 55% of all
Noosa jobs in that sector), manufacturing (44%), transport and warehousing (36%), retail
(31%), personal services (29%), health (23%) and education (23%).
Across the Noosa LGA there were a total of 24,240 employed residents in 2021, with
above average representation (when compared to Queensland averages) in:
•    Accommodation and food services
•    Rental, hiring and real estate services
•    Administrative and support services
•    Arts and recreation
•    Retail
•    Professional, scientific and technical services.

In 2021 there were 22,920 jobs available within Noosa Shire, resulting in a net outflow of
1,320 jobs when compared against the number of employed residents. This represents a
relatively high employment self-sufficiency rate of 95%, meaning that in net terms the
number of local jobs is close to the number of jobs required by the resident population.

However, when examined on a sectoral basis it is apparent that Noosa Shire ‘imports’
people to work in tourism-related sectors such as retail, accommodation and food
services and arts and recreation, whereas people working in many other sectors are
required to travel to Maroochydore and other locations to seek work.

These net inflows and outflows are shown in Figure 4.
Development within the VMU precinct has potential to create new employment
opportunities for retailing, entertainment, and office-based sectors. Importantly, the new
jobs in professional, technical and administrative support would help to retain net
employment outflows in those sectors.
