EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report provides a snapshot of 2016 census results as well as some more recent statistics to
serve as an update to the Community Profile prepared in 2014, most particularly as it relates to
demographics and housing. It considers the six different second level Statistical Areas (SA2s) of
Noosa Shire and benchmarks them against the Shire as a whole and also compares Noosa Shire
to the State of Queensland.
Importantly, this report does not cover all aspects of the ABS Census questionnaire. There are
around 35 separate census topics that can be drawn on in the future for further investigation for
such areas as community development, economic profiling or long term infrastructure planning.
RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Principal Strategic Planner to the Planning & Environment
Committee Meeting dated 7 August 2018 providing an update on particular community profile
data based on the 2016 Census of Population and Housing.
REPORT
In 2014 Council commissioned AEC Group to produce a Community Profile which compared
statistical data for Noosa Shire with both South East Queensland, and the State. For the purpose
of that report the Shire was divided into nine different areas with the view that these areas were
in part reflective of the existing Noosa Plan and may be useful for the preparation of the new
planning scheme. Since then new geography has been determined for the next planning scheme
and the former divisions are of less relevance. Therefore, rather than trying to realign the
statistics to the previous boundaries this review is based on the second level Statistical Areas
(SA2s) of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard July 2016, determined before the last
national census.
The six SA2s of relevance to Noosa Shire, shown on Map 1 are:
Tewantin;
Noosaville;
Noosa Heads;
Sunshine Beach (including Sunrise Beach and Castaways Beach);
Peregian Beach – Marcus Beach; and
Noosa Hinterland (which includes everything else including towns like Cooroy and
Pomona).
