ORDINARY MEETING AGENDA 2 JANUARY 2014
6.6 TEEWAH AIRSTRIP
DOCUMENT INFORMATION
File No
Author Acting Chief Executive Officer
SUMMARY/PURPOSE
The purpose of this report is to gain Council’s approval to restrict the use of the Noosa North
Shore Landing Ground Reserve (Teewah Airstrip) by prohibiting its use by helicopters whilst
allowing for its continued use by model aircraft, ultralights, and hang gliders.
In addition, approval is sought to authorise the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer to make
representation to the appropriate authorities to have the Cooloola Section of the Great Sandy
National Park and the surrounding and adjacent residential areas declared as restricted airspace.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Teewah Airstrip is situated on the Noosa North Shore between Teewah and Lake
Cooroibah. The airstrip is approximately 1.5km inland from the coast.
Many residents from Teewah, Noosa North Shore, Boreen Point, Cooroibah, Cooroy, Tewantin,
Noosaville to coastal communities extending south of Noosa Heads are concerned about
increased usage of the landing ground for commercial helicopter training activities and
subsequent widespread noise disturbances, including at night.
The helicopter operations adversely affect the amenity of residents and the large numbers of
tourists who visit the area because of its environmental significance.
