5.3 Community survey – living experiences in Noosa Shire during housing crisis
Sentiment Theme Key comments include:
Negative Challenging/difficult/stressful/concerning "Extremely difficult, no choice, constant fear of losing our rental."
"Stressful! Lived in Noosa most of my life. I have a good job and a good income, yet, when recently having to find new
accommodation (due to rental being sold), I was genuinely scared I would end up homeless due to the competitive
nature of rental market.”
I/family/friends have had to/will have to: "Hard to survive in Noosa.
-move out of Noosa Planning to leave by next year as it's hard to buy an affordable house here even though I have a permanent job in
-experience homelessness healthcare for the last 14 years."
-move into shared accommodation or in with
family "I have almost ended up homeless several times in the past 8 years, due to lack of affordable housing. I was just
–live in temporary housing (tent, caravan, Airbnb) fortunate that a workmate had a room."
Impacted by current Council restrictions that "I own a house at Lake MacDonald on 5 Acres which is classified as Rural Residential. The acreage can support
make it hard (multiple dwellings, rural sub additional housing however your current guidelines do not allow this. I am concerned if you limit splitting of Rural
division, STA approvals etc) Residential properties into smaller blocks then great land that could be available for other housing goes to waste."
"I am fortunate that I own my home. However, in the 8 years since living full time in Noosa I have witness the general
decline in affordable housing for permanent residents. The trend for investors buying houses for holiday rental has
increase which I believe has taken away the availability of affordable rentals for just about anyone else. The apparent
reluctance of council to stop rampant approval of holiday rentals in my opinion has been the main contributor to the
now finally recognised affordable housing rental crisis in Noosa."
Competitive rental and sales market "As I own my unit, personally I haven't had to access housing, however I have numerous younger people living with
me, simply because they can't access housing in the Noosa Shire. Too many other applicants, they work in hospitality,
and they are young. So not the top of anyone's list."
"Rent is expensive for someone on a pension, and there are so many applicants for each property."
