The rate of household kerbside recycling has remained relatively constant from previous years
and throughout the period except for the expected increase during the summer/Christmas period.
Annual bulk kerbside collection
At the time of writing the annual bulk kerbside collection has been under way for three weeks. All
residents were provided with a flyer outlining collection areas (including maps), dates,
permitted/prohibited items and instructions for utilising the collection service. This year, to
ensure extra clarity for residents, interactive maps were added to the Council website for people
to check their collection weeks.
Issues last year with illegally dumped mattresses influenced Waste Management to offer
residents a mattress collection service on the Friday before the Saturday collection. Mattresses
are picked up and recycled for a small fee of $20. To date the service has been well utilised with
approximately 30 mattresses being collected each weekend.
Unfortunately some residents have continued to put out prohibited items for collection. These
include mattresses, gas bottles, unbundled waste, tyres and paint. Prohibited items are not
collected and Waste Management officers follow up with residents to make sure the waste is
removed from the footpath and disposed of correctly. Steel, which is segregated during
collection, will be recycled by Council.
Waste collected (tonnes) during Bulk Kerbside Collection:
Week 1 (8 August) Total - 71.5t Steel - 7.16t
Week 2 (15 August) Total - 84.82t Steel – 27.8t
Week 3 (22 August) Total - 93.92t Steel – 20.84t
Overview of waste management contracts
The three major waste management contracts for waste collection, operation of the landfill
and operation of the resource recovery centre at Eumundi Road are currently held by
Cleanaway. These contracts are due to expire 31 August 2016, with an option for Council
to extend the term for one additional year. Waste Management will be recommending that
the option to extend to 31 August 2017 be taken up (a separate submission to Council will
be made on this matter including any contract variations required).
