RE: A Proposal for a Plastic Free* Noosa Plan
*As identified in a Responsible Plastics Guide (Noosa)
Dear Tony,
Further to our conversation, the Boomerang Alliance would like to submit a proposal to Noosa Council to
support a community-led plan to make Noosa a Plastic Free Community. *
Whilst the Boomerang Alliance is submitting this proposal, we have been in negotiation with a number of
key agencies and community organisations in Noosa. The proposal seeks Council support for a project that
will be community-led, through an alliance of organisations, including Noosa Council. Our proposal seeks
the involvement of all these key agencies and organisations in this plastic-free plan for Noosa.
The Boomerang Alliance intends to be a participant in the coordination and implementation of this plan.
However, we believe that its real value is in the Noosa community taking control itself through a targeted
and strategic plan to reduce Noosa’s plastic footprint.
We would be grateful if you could seek the endorsement of Council for this as soon as possible.
Our proposal seeks Council support for a plastic free plan involving local business, key agencies,
market/festivals and community organisations that will reduce Noosa’s plastic footprint, clean its
environment and demonstrate to other communities how to achieve such an outcome.
In a nutshell, the proposed plan aims to focus on a list of identified disposable plastic items that includes
coffee cups/lids, straws, takeaway containers, utensils, single-use water bottles, plastic bags and utensils
and promote alternative practices to their use. *
Our intention is to have those practices adopted at cafes, restaurants and food vendors, in retail outlets
and at markets, festivals, fetes and events in Noosa. Individuals will also be encouraged to take up the
plastic reduction challenge.
The items we plan to target are problematic plastics that comprise a significant part of the litter and waste
stream, and lead to the growing problem of plastics in our environment, particularly the marine
environment. Reducing their use will create a cleaner and less littered Noosa, an enhanced reputation as a
tourist destination and more aware and prouder community.
