Entertainment Noise Assessment
3.7.2 Sound system configuration during testing
Three (3) sound system scenarios were tested individually: G51 Check Item 39 ☐
• All in-house sound systems operating cumulatively
• Ground Floor portable PA operating only
• Function Room portable PA operating only
The purpose of these test scenarios were to determine the individual
contribution of noise levels at each affected premises from each of the
above key noise sources. A test signal was played through the
loudspeaker systems during each scenario, for the purpose of measuring
intrusive noise levels at the locations described in Sections 3.1 to 3.4.
The source material was selected to be representative of the type of
music proposed to be played at the venue. The selected source material
for the intrusive tests was Mella Dee – “Techno Disco Tool”.
The portable PA speakers used (as detailed in Table 4) generated
significant noise levels throughout the venue and were observed to
dominate low frequency noise levels received at the affected premises
when compared to the scenario where only the in-house sound system
was operating. For example, at Location 2 (L2), the level measured at
63Hz when the portable PA speakers were operating at ground level was
7 dB higher than levels measured at 63Hz when only the in-house sound
system was operating. This finding indicates that booked entertainment
providing their own sound system may have potential to dominate low
frequency noise levels external to the premises, depending on the power
of portable PA speakers brought into the venue by entertainment.
Due to the observed configuration of the venue’s sound system, it is
highly unlikely for portable standalone PA speakers on the stage within
the Main Bar Lounge (ground floor) to operate concurrently with the
surrounding in-house distributed sound system. The two systems would
not be linked and as a result, any signal played through the systems
would be independent of one another and clash.
With regard to cumulative noise, a -3 dB adjustment is applied in Section
4 to noise limits to consider concurrent operation of both the ground floor
and function room standalone portable PA speaker entertainment. This is
discussed further in Section 4. The lowest noise limit calculated at the
CEMLs across each of the 3 scenarios (plus patron noise, refer to
Section 3.8) is considered the final maximum noise limit at the CEML.
This is expected to suitably address cumulative noise generated by the
venue.
