4. Medical Waste (Clinical and Related Waste)
The proposed development proposes the establishment of an Aged Care facility containing
consulting suites for medical professionals. The day to day operations of this component of the
proposed development will result in the generation of medical or ‘clinical or related waste’. The
methods of segregation, storage and collection of the generated medical or ‘clinical or related waste’
is detailed in this section of the report.

4.1.1 Waste Segregation and Storage
Segregation of all clinical and related waste is mandatory and will be undertaken pursuant to the
Environment Legislation Amendment and Repeal Regulation (No. 1) 2014. In accordance with the
Waste Regulation, Palm Lake Works Pty Ltd will segregate all clinical and related waste into the
following categories:

           a)   Clinical Waste:
                (i)     animal waste;
                (ii)    discarded sharps;
                (iii)   human tissue waste; and
                (iv) laboratory and associated waste directly resulting from the processing of
                        specimens.
           b) Related Waste:
                (i)     chemical waste;
                (ii)    cytotoxic waste;
                (iii)   human body parts;
                (iv)    pharmaceutical waste; and
                (v)     radioactive waste
           c)   General Waste.
All clinical or related wastes must be packaged, labelled, handled and transported appropriately to
minimise the potential for contact with the waste and reduce the risk to the environment from
accidental releases.

All clinical and related waste containers are to be stored in a secured internal room in accordance
with requirements prescribed within section 41ZB & C of the Environmental Legislation Amendment
and Repeal Regulation (No.1) 2014. The medical centre will provide a secure storeroom for the
storage of clinical or regulated waste in accordance with the Environmental Protection Regulations.

Design of clinical and related waste containers will be in accordance with Schedules 7A of the Waste
Regulation as presented in Table 4.1. Note: It is an offence under Section 41Y of the Environmental
Legislation Amendment and Repeal Regulation (No.1) 2014 to use equipment that does not comply
with the design rules where applicable.
