SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 9 AUGUST 2016

The information shows that the recycling and diversion rate for the 2016FY has increased from
the previous year. This may be due to improved resource recovery practices and the introduction
and publicity around the Towards Zero Waste education and community engagement campaign.
The statistics above do not account for a large volume of concrete that has been diverted and
has been recently processed for sale. This remains on site and its diversion will only be reflected
in the data when the product leaves the site. This product will be actively marketed shortly and it
is anticipated that the sale of this material will reflect favourably in next year’s diversion statistics.

There continues to be more waste produced by the Noosa Community year on year and this is
reflected in the ongoing increase in waste being landfilled.

With the exception of concrete (explanation above) there has been a significant increase in the
recovery of all major categories of waste over the last financial year. The last financial year has
seen kerbside recyclables collected from yellow lidded bins increase by 289 tonnes. It is also
worth noting that contamination rates in recycle bins remain low. Again this improvement may be
attributable to Council’s Towards Zero Waste campaign.

Council introduced compulsory green waste bins for all new dwellings from July 2016. In
September 2017 Council will introduce mandatory green waste bins for residents in all townships.
It is anticipated that this will significantly increase the amount of green waste recovered and
therefore also improve the percentage of waste diverted from landfill. The target set by State
Government and figured into Council’s Waste Recycling & Reduction Plan calls for Queensland
councils to divert 55% of waste from landfill by 2024.

Bulk Kerbside Collection

Bulk waste collected
Total waste collected October 2015 1068.67 tonnes
Metal segregated and recycled 206.53 tonnes
Waste sent to landfill 862.14 tonnes
Total Waste collected June 2014 1,501 tonnes

The amount of waste collected from the last bulk waste kerbside collection was significantly down
from the previous collection. Details of the last collection and the potential future delivery (post
2017) have been discussed in a separate Council report and are subject to further investigation
by WMS officers. The commencement date for the next bulk waste collection has been set down
for early April 2017.
