SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 9 AUGUST 2016

Towards Zero waste education and community engagement strategy
WMS has initiated recycling and waste education talks and workshops with schools. These have
been initially focussed on four schools in the Noosa Shire that expressed interest. Sessions
were run between February and June 2016 and engaged over 1611 students. Additional
workshops have also been given to one preschool, a school staff workshop and a retirement
village engaging with a further 65 people participating. Feedback from participants has been
extremely positive.
Recycling has been introduced for the first time to students in Sunshine Beach High School and
Good Shepard Lutheran College, and is about to start at Noosa District High School Pomona
Campus. Waste audits have been completed at these and a number of other schools to
determine waste production before and after implementing recycling.
At the beginning of the year, recycling was also introduced at the Noosa Depot and the Noosa
Leisure Centre.

Event bin lids and covers to promote recycling at events were purchased at the end of 2015.
They have now been used successfully at the Noosa Tri, Festival of Surfing, Noosa Food & Wine
Festival & the Festival of Water. Council are also working in partnership with the Noosa Farmers
Markets on a recycling trial at the markets.

During National Recycling week in November 2015, waste and recycling displays occurred every
day at different locations throughout Noosa. Waste & Recycling Displays have occurred at the
Festival of Surfing, The World Environment Day Festival & the Festival of Water.

Various Waste and Recycling displays have been set up at several schools, libraries, and other
Council facilities. Battery bins are now available for the public to recycle rechargeable batteries.
