SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 9 AUGUST 2016
water charges were mainly due to a change in Unity Water’s charging methodology, rather than
increased usage. There was no evidence of electricity usage being higher than previous years,
however bills for the same total consumption can vary greatly as a result of the peak demand
charge.
Collectively, expenditure on water and electricity comprises 13% of all operational expenditure
(exclusive of depreciation and internal charges) and was approximately $51,000 higher in
2015/16 than in 2014/15. Given the high utilities usage and cost, the NAC is very keen to find
ways to become more efficient and sustainable and looks forward to working with the recently
appointed team at Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE) to find ways to do this.
The above overspends were offset by small savings across a number of other areas. While plant
and equipment maintenance finished $26,154 under budget, $18,000 of this was due to a
contractor being unable to complete a job prior to the end of year and as such, management will
look to carryover this allocation into 2016/17’s budget.
2. CUSTOMERS
The NAC recorded 235,039 attendances for the year, a drop of 14,051 from the record
attendances of 249,090 for the 2014/15 financial period. This year’s lower attendance was due to
the pool closures associated with scheduled maintenance.
The drop in attendance numbers saw the operational cost per visit (exclusive of depreciation and
internal charges) shift from $0.50 in 2014/15 to $0.59 in 2015/16. For further context, the centre’s
year-on-year revenue increased by $9,893 (0.63% up), while expenditure rose by just $5,349
(0.25% up) despite, as outlined earlier, water and electricity costs alone increasing by
approximately $51,000.
The NAC continues to have limited capacity during most weekday afternoons due to the
increased popularity of water polo. While lanes are open to the public, these are generally limited
to one or two during the peak times of 3.30pm – 6pm.
