11. PUBLIC QUESTION TIME
1. BREE JOHNSON
Question 1.
Noosa Councillor Clare Stewart, now the Kin Kin quarry is operational and the only
access for the quarry trucks to Kin Kin is via McKinnon Drive, this has now become a
major safety issue as I have found it extremely unsafe as I have now been forced to
share McKinnon Drive with the quarry trucks to access the disability school of Sunshine
Butterflies. I, Bree Johnson want to know what you as the Mayor of Noosa are prepared
to do to make McKinnon Drive safe for people with disabilities and the general public
now McKinnon Drive is used by the quarry trucks.
Response by Larry Sengstock, Director Infrastructure Services
The subject section of McKinnon Drive is not managed by Noosa Council as it comes
under the control of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and is part of
the major road network where higher traffic volumes and higher speed limits are
supported. Registered vehicles (including quarry trucks) are permitted to legally drive
on all roads across Queensland unless a section of road is specifically signed otherwise,
such as a bridge load limit. Provided these trucks have a current registration they can
legally travel on McKinnon Drive. All licenced motorists are required to drive to the
prevailing road conditions and in accordance with Queensland Road Rules. Council will
refer this enquiry to TMR for their consideration.
Question 2.
Noosa Councillors including Councillors Amelia Lorentson and Clare Stewart, what is the
next step/steps that I, Bree Johnson have to do in terms of having my extension of the
Lake Cooroibah bike and walking path to Silverwood Drive become a reality to have a
safer option for the accessing the disability school of Sunshine Butterflies and for a safer
option for the general residents of Cooroibah who access Tewantin and Noosa Areas
using their bikes.
Response by Larry Sengstock, Director Infrastructure Services
The proposed shared path from Lake Cooroibah to Silverwood Drive was identified within
the Noosa Cycling and Walking Strategy and Implementation Plan under Project ID
193B. The project was assessed against a criteria aimed at “getting more people riding
a bike or walking” and “achieving value for money”. The criteria and scoring system was
developed in consultation with the Project Reference Group (PRG) and later reviewed
by the broader community through Council’s Yoursay Community Feedback. The
proposed shared path from Lake Cooroibah to Silverwood Drive scored within the low
range when compared to other projects. In order to undertake this project Council would
need to reallocate resources and funding from other projects which have scored higher
in the prioritisation process, or increase Capital spend resulting in rate increases.
