SPECIAL MEETING AGENDA 8 OCTOBER 2021
Community comment Proposed response
General – CHAP approach
Any due diligence done by purchasers in the past
half century would have shown them that they were
buying on a flood plain, in the Anthropocene era.
There are ratepayers in other areas of Noosa Shire
who also need proportionate attention to their
issues.
We support the work being undertaken by Noosa to Noted.
develop a comprehensive and coordinated
adaptation program that responds to the coastal
risks associated with climate change. The draft
CHAP is based on a detailed and robust technical
assessment of coastal hazards now and into the
future, including hazard modelling and risk
assessments. Good planning is essential to
mitigate and adapt to climate change: it is much
less costly to address now than it will be for future
generations. The value of housing and
infrastructure at risk from sea level rise in Australia
has been valued at more than $226 billion.
We applaud the work by Council in developing the Noted.
CHAP. The draft plan is comprehensive and
carefully evaluates identified and impending risks
and accords appropriate actions for these various
scenarios. We welcome the preference for natural
adaptation options such as dune revegetation and
management over ‘hard’ engineering such as sea
walls. Long term funding and resource are needed
to ensure success of these natural, nature-based
measures.
We urge Council to manage any development
intensification or development of non-coastal
dependent infrastructure in vulnerable locations.
We commend the engagement conducted thus far.
Continued and meaningful communication
engagement and education are vital components
for preparing for the impacts of climate change.
