Ecological Assessment Report for Proposed Hinterland Adventure Playground – Noosa Shire Council
August 2109 by Noosa & District Landcare
The LMS however is mapped as a ‘Category R – Reef Regrowth Watercourse Vegetation’ zone.
Bordering the northern edge of the site is remnant Regional Ecosystem (RE) 12.3.2 Wet Eucalypt
Open Forest, which is listed as ‘Of Concern’ (VMA) and at the southern tip of the site is remnant RE
12.3.1 Complex Notophyll Vine Forest which is listed as ‘Endangered’ (VMA).
1.3.3 Current landuse and background history
The site is a recreational parkland. There are large areas of open lawn used by local residents for
walking and pet exercise, with limited day-use SUV and RV parking.
The area is used intermittently by market garden stalls and small festivals.
Over the last decade the riparian zone of the Cooroy Creek has undergone revegetation and weed
management activities to restore the RE 12.3.1 Complex Notophyll Vine Forest habitat. One such
project included recreating overhang habitat
along the creek bank called LUNKERS. (Little
Underwater Neighbourhood Keepers
Encompassing Rheotactic Salmonids). Refer to
Figure 3. It is an adaptation of recreated fish
habitat to suit the breeding needs of the
Endangered (EPBC) Giant Barred Frog, Myxophyes
iterates. The LMS is at its northern most range of
this species but has been known to be found in
many areas of the Mary River. The LUNKERS site
became the focal point of several community
plantings and provided an opportunity for
education and investigation for school groups and
community groups such as the local scouts. The
location of the LUNKERS is shown on the map in
Appendix A.
