1.5 Field Assessment
Preliminary desktop analysis was undertaken using Google Streetview and historical aerial imagery (based on
Nearmap and Noosa Shire Council’s interactive mapping programs). This provided an understanding of the
local context of the subject land and the broader Noosaville area, and assisted in the identification of the
boatshed visual catchment.
Field assessment was then undertaken to assess the impacts on local character and the visual amenity of
adjoining uses. The visibility of the boatshed, and its visual catchment, did not require GIS modelling, given it
has already largely been constructed. GPS referenced photographs were taken from various locations and
distances in the area, including at a local scale (<150m) and a neighbourhood scale (<600m). For the purposes
of this project, consideration at a suburban scale (1km or greater) was not warranted. The viewpoints were
selected as representative of a ‘worst case’ scenario; being the most visible and/or sensitive locations. Based
on this field assessment, a visual catchment map of the boatshed was prepared (Figure 4-1).
Some residences from within the visual catchment area were accessed (with owner’s permission) including
apartments located at 5-7 and 9 Russell Street, Noosaville. Photographs were taken during inspection
(February 2019) and some historical photos were also provided 1, which helped identify the extent of change,
over time. Photomontages were then prepared showing the proposed building modifications and the
