2.3 Vegetation
2.3.1 Field-verified Vegetation
The Rehabilitation Area contains a combination of mature camphor laurels (diameter at breast
height of largest individuals 1.2m) and mature black wattles (diameter at breast height of largest
individuals 1m) with wet sclerophyll and notophyll vine forest elements in the understorey. Refer
to Figures 2 and 3. The canopy is semi-closed, with median canopy height of 10-15m.
Approximately 40% of the canopy cover is camphor laurel. However, the community is relatively
species rich, with a total of 63 native species identified and has excellent regeneration potential.
A comprehensive species list is provided in Appendix A.
2.3.2 Desktop Analysis of Vegetation Mapping
The Rehabilitation Area is mapped as a riparian buffer area in the Noosa Plan Riparian Buffer
Overlay as it lies within 50 metres of the channel of a mapped waterway. It is not mapped as an
area of Biodiversity Significance in the Noosa Plan Biodiversity Overlay. The vegetation
community is not mapped as Regulated Vegetation (remnant or regrowth) by the Queensland
Government. This is because of the level of disturbance (non-native canopy species).
The Queensland Government’s Vegetation Management Pre-clear Regional Ecosystem mapping
(version 13) was consulted to determine the Pre-clearing Regional Ecosystem (RE) that would
have been likely to occur in the Rehabilitation Area prior to human disturbance. Pre-clear
Regional Ecosystems are the vegetation communities that are consistently associated with a
particular combination of geology, landform and soil in a bioregion. The mapped Pre-clear
Regional Ecosystems in the Rehabilitation Area are:
▪ RE 12.11.10 - Notophyll vine forest +/- Araucaria cunninghamii on metamorphics +/- interbedded
volcanics (65%)
▪ RE12.11.3 – Eucalyptus siderophloia, E. propinqua +/- E. microcorys, Lophostemon confertus,
Corymbia intermedia, E. acmenoides open forest on metamorphics +/- interbedded volcanics
with vine forest in gullies (20%)
▪ RE12.11.16 – Eucalyptus cloeziana open forest on metamorphics +/- interbedded volcanics
(10%)
▪ RE 12.11.2 – Tall open forest of Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus microcorys, Lophostemon
confertus with vine forest understorey (5%)
2.3.3 Weeds
A total of 31 introduced flora species were identified, including four Restricted Invasive Plants:
i. Camphor laurel (Cinnamomum camphora)
ii. Chinese Celtics (Celtis sinensis)
iii. Dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia elegans)
iv. Lantana (Lantana camara)
Photos of selected weeds are provided in Figure 4.
