ACOUSTICS & AIR QUALITY
9 Recommendations & Conclusion
A road and rail noise assessment has been conducted for the proposed retirement community
and aged care facility at Trading Post Road, Cooroy. The results and recommendations of the
assessment are as follows:
An acoustic barrier is proposed for the site boundary as shown in Figure 6.1. The barrier
is modelled to a height of 2.1m above the finished ground level at the site boundary
(based on the proposed ground levels provided by the client). It is noted that in the
earlier noise report for this subject site (ASK Report 4991R01V01 dated 12/03/2009)
the barrier height was restricted to 2.1 m resulting in higher noise exposures at
dwellings. This is accommodated with an increase in acoustic construction upgrades to
the dwellings. It is proposed to use the same barrier height limit of 2.1m and to meet the
internal noise levels via the MP4.4 Construction Categories nominated in Table D.1 and
Table D.2 in Appendix D.
Building construction is to be upgraded in accordance with the MP 4.4 Categories
nominated in Table D.1 and Table D.2 in Appendix D, and in line with recommendations
listed in Section 8. The construction requirements associated with these noise
categories are included in Appendix E.
To achieve the target noise reductions from external noise to internal noise levels in
MP4.4 will require the construction details are of an appropriate acoustic standard, and
that all external openings to be closed when these habitable rooms are occupied.
Therefore, an air-conditioning/mechanical ventilation system that does not degrade the
internal acoustic environment or the sound isolation of the building envelope, and also
meets the ventilation requirements of the Building Code of Australia may need to be
installed.
Compliance with the above recommendations is predicted to result in compliance with relevant
noise criteria.
