ACOUSTICS & AIR QUALITY
8 Internal Noise Assessment
The predicted noise levels shown in Tables C.1 & C.2 and Tables D.1 & D.2 are used to
determine the associated noise category for each allotment or room facade based on Schedule
3, Table 1 of MP4.4 as follows in Table 8.1.
Table 8.1 MP4.4 Noise Categories
MP4.4 Noise Category Rail Noise Level Road Traffic Noise Level
Lmax dBA L10(18hour) dBA
4 ≥ 85 ≥ 73
3 80 to 84 68 to 72
2 75 to 79 63 to 67
1 70 to 74 58 to 62
0 ≤ 69 ≤ 57
The MP4.4 classifications are included in Tables C.1 & C.2 and Tables D.1 & D.2. From Table
D.1, with the inclusion of the proposed acoustic barrier, it can be seen that the noise categories
are up to Category 3, and are greater than zero in most instances and therefore façade
treatment is required to be assessed for these rooms.
In accordance with MP4.4 the construction requirements are to be either:
(i) Using construction materials nominated in MP4.4, as described in Appendix E.
(ii) Using construction materials and methods that meet the minimum acoustic
rating (Rw) requirements in MP4.4, as shown in Appendix E, based on the
manufacturer’s specifications.
To achieve the target noise reductions from external noise to internal noise levels in MP4.4 will
require the construction details are of an appropriate acoustic standard, and that all external
openings to be closed when these habitable rooms are occupied. Therefore, an air-
conditioning/mechanical ventilation system that does not degrade the internal acoustic
environment or the sound isolation of the building envelope, and also meets the ventilation
requirements of the Building Code of Australia may need to be installed.
