Geotechnical Report
A new fence comprising a rendered block wall with a breeze block parapet section (maximum total
height 2.8m) will form the south-eastern boundary adjacent to the pool timber deck surrounds.
6.2 Site Classification
GeoCon2012 has identified the site as being Class P in accordance with AS2870-2011 due to “poor surface
bearing capacity within the founding soils”. We concur with the Class P site classification on this basis and
the presence of “uncontrolled fill”. Reactive soil movements are not expected for the sandy fill and natural
sandy soil profile. However, the proposed residence needs to be designed by engineering principles due to
the Class P site classification.
6.3 Excavation
6.3.1 Dilapidation Surveys
Prior to the commencement of demolition and excavation a detailed dilapidation report should be compiled
on the neighbouring property to the south-east. Consideration may be given to including the rear portion of
the neighbouring property to the north-west. In addition, Council may require that dilapidation surveys
report be completed on the Council assets lining the street frontage, i.e. the roadway and kerb and gutter.
Likewise, Unitywater may require that a dilapidation survey report be completed on the sewer main to the
north-east of the site. The property owners should be asked to confirm that the reports present a fair record
of existing conditions as the reports may assist the client in defending themselves from unfair damage claims.
6.3.2 Excavation Methods
The excavation recommendations provided below should be complemented by reference to the current Safe
Work Australia Code of Practice ‘Excavation Work’.
The outline of the proposed alterations and additions are indicated on the attached Figure 2. Bulk
excavations are expected to extend to a maximum depth of about 0.8m below existing levels for the proposed
pool. The pool excavations are not expected to extend beyond the site boundaries although they will extend
close to the fence forming the north-eastern site boundary. Monitoring of the fence should be undertaken
whilst excavating the north-eastern side of the pool and engineer designed temporary propping may be
required based on assessment by the structural engineer.
Based on the GeoCon2102 investigation results, the proposed excavations will encounter the sandy fill
profile. Any topsoil or root affected soils should be stripped and separately stockpiled for re-use in landscape
areas or disposed of off site.
Due to the small size of the site and restricted access, we expect the excavations will be completed using
small sized tracked excavators, and excavation of the sandy soils will be readily completed with buckets of
such equipment.
