REPORT
Noosa Council is licenced by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to
operate the Eumundi Road landfill. The licensed responsibilities include a number of criteria
that relate to the quality of stormwater released into the adjacent natural environment.
Sunshine Coast Council had previously engaged consultants to design stormwater
management systems to meet the requirements of the approval. The proposed systems
include:
1. Construction of a biological control basin, ‘Bio Basin’, designed to collect and treat
nutrient rich stormwater run-off from the green waste and mulching stockpiles using
reed beds before discharge to the adjoining environment.
2. Upgrade of the existing High Efficiency Sedimentation (HES) Basin to reduce the
release of sediment to the adjacent environment. Recent samples downstream of the
discharge point exceed the licence for the discharge of sediment for stormwater
leaving the site and this needs to be rectified to comply with licence conditions or risk
penalties under the Environmental Protection Legislation. The upgrade is designed to
accommodate a greater area of the landfill site in lieu of constructing a new HES on
another part of the site.
