SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 11 JUNE 2019

Some premises as depicted in the following photos already use a dedicated general waste bulk
bin exclusively for garden waste and would benefit financially by converting the service to a
garden waste bin service (particularly in 2019/20 when the waste levy is introduced).

4. Waste Levy Implications
The $75 per tonne waste levy applies to any commercial waste that is disposed to landfill from 1
July 2019. This applies to garden waste within a commercial waste bin. The levy will rise to $90
per tonne over the next 4 years.
However, if the waste is collected and diverted from landfill through a garden waste collection
service, the cost of a garden waste service is much lower than a general waste bin. This is due to
reduced green waste processing costs vs landfill disposal/waste levy components in the service
charge. The garden waste service:
 Provides a significant saving if a general waste service can be replaced with a garden
       waste service.
 Reduces waste to landfill and consumption of landfill airspace, supporting the waste
       reduction strategy for Queensland.
 Recovers a valuable resource for reuse (garden waste converted to mulch).

The table below compares garden waste and general waste bin charges (currently proposed for
2019/20):

Bin Size Garden Waste Charge 2019/20 Commercial General Waste Charge 2019/20
240 litre bin $52.50 serviced fortnightly $395 collected weekly including a yellow lid
                                                     recycling service fortnightly
360 litre bin $80 serviced fortnightly $550.50 collected weekly including a yellow lid
                                                     360 recycling service fortnightly
1,100 litre bulk bin $700 serviced weekly $2,018 collected weekly including a 240 litre
                                                     recycling service weekly
