PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 11 JUNE 2019

Land parcels of sufficient size may be eligible for Nature Refuge status, providing State
protection under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. Eight Nature Refuges have been gazetted
over 13 environment levy land parcels and one parcel is pending.
Council, the Noosa Parks Association and the State Government have committed a total of $3.5
million to the buy-out of the plantation license area at the Yurol-Ringtail State Forests. This
project will facilitate the transfer of 2,400ha of State Forest to National Park. On 15 May 2019
State parliament approved the first stage of transfers with 357ha of State Forest going into
National Park. Funds are currently held in trust pending cessation of plantation timber harvesting
activities. Although technically not a land purchase, the buy-out of the license offered an
alternative, and cheaper, model for securing environmentally significant land.
