2. Highlighted Projects
Two projects have been identified as highlighted projects for this report and they are the
Peregian Beach - Beach Access 49 timber deck replacement and the Gympie Terrace Foreshore
furniture refurbishment. The purpose of highlighting projects is to provide information on these
projects in more detail than that provided in the attached spreadsheet and acknowledge the work
being undertaken. These two projects were both carried out by Council’s labour force.
Peregian Beach - Beach Access 49 Refurbishment
The Beach Access 49 refurbishment project included the replacement of the old pine decking
with new dressed hardwood ‘Superdeck’ that is 1.2 metres wide and a total of 212 metres in
length. Council’s bridge crew headed by Dave Pearce completed the project over a 6 week
period at a total cost of $54,000.
BEFORE AFTER
Gympie Terrace Foreshore – Park furniture refurbishment
The Gympie Terrace park furniture refurbishment was highlighted as a must do project to renew
rotted and damaged park tables and seating. Council staff considered a number of replacement
and renewal options as well as considering a major refurbishment of the existing tables and
seating. The preferred approach was to undertake the refurbishment of the tables and seats to
deliver this $50,000 project.
Included in the refurbishment was the replacement of the buried rotted timber component of the
tables and seating with a galvanised steel stirrup. The stirrup was concreted in-situ using the old
footing holes under the existing concrete slab, the old rotted timber post was removed and once
the stirrup was in place the timber support posts were bolted to the new stirrup. A 10mm gap
between the ground and post was included to help eliminate any future timber rot caused by the
timber being in direct contact with the ground. The stirrup also helps support the seating planks
with larger bolts and eliminated another issue of sagging seats.
