EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Munna Point foreshore was severely eroded during Cyclone Oswald in January 2013. The
erosion caused large trees to become undermined and a large scarp had developed along the
shoreline. At the time, Council immediately installed a geofabric wall as emergent works to attempt
to stop further erosion. The Development Approval for these emergent works required Council to
look at a permanent solution to address erosion at this site.
The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, via Council’s consultation process,
recommended that Council should trial a groyne field to address the erosion and channel issues.
It was anticipated that such a solution would ensure that any sand nourishment undertaken on the
Munna Point Caravan site would be better protected.
The design of the groyne field was to be delivered in two (2) stages. Stage 1, was a trial to ascertain
whether the groyne field would successfully address erosion issues and, if so, then the remaining
groynes (Stage 2) were to be constructed.
Stage 1 of the groyne field was completed in August 2015. Monitoring of Stage 1 has been carried
out by Council’s surveyor with the survey results being reviewed by Council’s consultant
International Coastal Management (ICM). The survey results demonstrate that the groynes have
been successful in helping the accretion of sand on the beach. Erosion at the site has been
minimised and dredging operations have allowed the river channel to move away from the Munna
Point foreshore.
RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Coastal and Foreshores Technical Officer to the Services &
Organisation Committee Meeting dated 8 November 2016 and award contract 1617T012 Munna
