Native Foresters
The methods used to assess water quality and differentiate between groundwater or surface
water flows are listed in Table 1. The results of these investigations are summarised in
Appendix H.
TABLE 1: Water quality assessment methods
Parameter Assessment method(s)
Measured in the field using a B211 Horiba™ portable pH probe
Water pH
with two-point calibration (calibrated daily, before use).
Assessed visually and/or through analysis of water samples
collected in the field. Water samples were analysed for tannin-
Tannin-staining staining using a spectrophotometer following the methodology
outlined in Cuthbert and del Giorgio (1992). Samples were filtered
through a 0.22 µM filter before being analysed.
Measured using a Horiba Aqua Twin salt meter (accurate to 0.1
Salinity/conductivity
ppt NaCl).
Assessed visually in the field. Surface water assessed as ‘clear’,
Turbidity/clarity ‘slight-to-moderately turbid’ or ‘highly turbid’ depending on
visibility in areas of shallow water (5-10 cm deep).
2.2.5 Justification of survey timing and weather conditions
The field surveys were conducted in early-mid autumn, during hot, humid conditions
following a series of rain events. Weather conditions are summarised below in Table 2 for
each survey day. There was 124.8mm of rain in the month preceding the March survey,
and 146.2 mm of rain in the month leading up to the April survey. The survey conducted in
January 2021 was conducted in warm, wet conditions with temperature reaching 28
degrees Celsius and 93 mm of rain in the preceding five days.
