Introduction
In order to meet its Legislated, Regulatory and Contractual responsibilities and obligations in the first instance and more importantly to provide for the safety
health and welfare of its employees and others in its workplace, KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD will ensure all work is carried out in accordance with a relevant and
current SWMS.
The work to be undertaken is Demolition.
KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD employees and sub-contractors will meet the following criteria before starting the work described in this SWMS:
Be skilled and competent to carry out the work allocated to them;
Possess Construction Industry General Induction Training Certificate;
Possess all WorkCover certificated of competency required to carry out the work allocated to them;
Have completed the Principal Contractors safety induction training;
Have been trained in the requirements of this SWMS and successfully completed a competency questionnaire; and
Participate in the documentation of the Principal Contractors Daily Job Safety Analysis form before starting work each day or whenever conditions
change requiring the issue of another Job Safety Analysis.
This SWMS will be reviewed KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD employees and others who may be impacted by the works in progress and its associated risks.
The revised SWMS will be presented to the Principal Contractors Safety Coordinator for acceptance prior to any work commencing under the revised SWMS.
No work will commence under the revised SWMS until all employees and sub-contractors have been trained and understand the new conditions.
Manual Handling
Manual Handling activities are a significant part of most work activities. All manual handling will be carried out in accordance with the conditions of the
National Standard and Code of Practice for manual handling. Supervisors will be trained in manual handling hazard identification risk assessment and the
development of safe manual handling plans. Supervisors will consult with management and employees in the development of these plans and communicate them
to the employees before they commence any manual handling activities covered by SWMS. All manual handling safety plans will be included in the relevant
sections of the SWMS.
The basic requirements for safe manual handling are:
Face the direction you are going to move the load if possible. Take a firm grip on the object. Bend the knees and use legs to lift. Keep arms straight and hold the
load close to the body. Turn feet in the direction of travel, do not twist the body. Use team lifting methods or mechanical lifting equipment for lifting heavy
loads. When using the team lifting method on member should be nominated as the team leader and the lift made on his count.

Noise Control
Noise levels near or above the threshold limit value of 85dBa could be generated at various times throughout the work. KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD will
identify these potentially harmful noise levels when or before they occur and if they cannot be eliminated require those carrying out the work and those in the
near vicinity to the work and impacted by the noise to wear approved hearing protection.
KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD will use one or a combination of the hierarchy of hazard controls where possible to reduce the noise levels and use PPE as a final
protective measure.
KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD will supply their employees with hearing protection and provide training in its proper use, fitting, wearing, storage, care and
maintenance. Records of issue and training will be maintained by KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD in the appropriate registers, kept on site and made available for
inspection on request by the Principal Contractor.
The general rule of thumb for wearing Hearing Protection is when noise levels require you to raise your voice to be heard by someone standing with you, then
Hearing Protection is needed.
Hazardous Substances
All hazardous substances to be used during the works under this SWMS will be notified to the Principal Contractor prior to being brought on site and a current
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) will be provided by KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD .
A register of hazardous substances in use on site shall be created and maintained in an up-to-date condition on site at a central location. Individual MSDS will
be available to those using the hazardous substances at the point of use.
All employees who will use, store, transport, decant or label hazardous substances will be trained in the content of the MSDS.
KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD will supply their employees with PPE and Safety equipment and train them in its proper use, fitting, wearing storage, care,
cleaning and maintenance.
KHODR CIVIL PTY LTD site manager and supervisor will monitor the use of hazardous substances and the appropriate PPE and safety equipment.
Working at Heights
Working at heights involves working from scaffolding, ladders, step ladders, elevating work platforms and from roofs or high ground where the person
carrying out the work can fall 2 metres or greater.
Ladders are not work platforms and must not be used as one.
More detailed information can be found in the relevant sections of this SWMS dealing with the work steps that require work to be carried out at height.
Where an elevated work platform is used to access a roof or other work area where the worker can fall 2 metres or more, the person leaving the EWP to access
the other area must wear a harness with double lanyard and have at least one lanyard attached to an approved anchor point at all times.
Working and walking backwards when working at heights greater than 2 metres should be avoided at all times.

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
Work Step
The work step is an individual task performed in combination of tasks that collectively make up the job of work. For instance filling the mower with
fuel, checking the oil, setting the cutting height, attaching the grass catcher, starting the mower are some of the work steps in the Job of mowing the
lawn.
The SWMS lists the tasks sequentially that are required to carry out the job for which the SWMS is written.
Hazard Identification
The section OHS Hazards lists those ‘things’ in relation to a specific work step that have the potential to cause illness injury or damage to people,
plant, equipment or property. The hazard could be the system of work or a piece of plant, equipment, substance or other energy form which has or
may have the potential to cause harm – the hazard is ‘what’ could hurt you. The following table lists the common forms of energy and examples of
their source.
Potential energy – Ladders, lifts, hoists, scaffolding i.e. Thermal energy – high and low temperatures
falls by people or materials Pressure energy – Pressurisation and Pneumatic Equipment and systems, gas
Kinetic Energy – plant, equipment in motion i.e. struck- cylinders
by Acoustic energy – ambient noise or noise generated by work.
Mechanical energy – machine guarding, unexpected Radiation energy – solar oar radiation from welding, x-rays
start – up or shut down of machinery Bio mechanical energy – manual handling, lift, push, pull, carry or restrain
Electrical energy – Cables and wiring, Control devices, Microbiological energy – infectious materials, blood born pathogens, needle
Conductors, Switchboards and Switchgear, Electrical stick injuries
appliances, Welding and electricity.
Chemical energy – flammables, combustibles,
corrosives and toxic
Risk Assessment
Risk is a measure of “How” the hazard could hurt you or cause damage. Most hazards can have more than one way of causing harm or damage. There
may be none, all or some of these present and in varying degrees. It is important therefore to recognize the amount of risk the hazard represents to us
in any given situation.
Depending on the combination of situation, exposure and severity of outcome measured against the likelihood of an unwanted event occurring we can
measure and rank the amount of risk. This is done by using the following risk matrix and recording the result in the “Risk Score Column”.

OHS Control Methods
Measuring the amount of risk helps in prioritizing and determining the control methods to use to provide the best protection for people, plant,
equipment and property. The following hierarchy of controls must be used when determining the bet methods of controlling the risk associated
with the identified hazards.
Once the control methods have been determined the risk assessment is carried out again and the risk score recorded in the residual risk score
column. It is important to take this step. Firstly to ensure that no additional risks have been created by the control methods and secondly, to show
the reduced level of risk still existing at the time the work is done.
Hierarchy of Control
1. Any obligation under OHS Regulation 2001 to control a risk by taking specific risk control measures, or by taking specific risk control
measures in a particular order, is in addition to the obligations referred to in the Hierarchy of Controls.
2. To control a risk to health or safety (in any case in which the elimination of the risk is not reasonably practicable) we must take the following
measures (in the order specified) to minimize the risk to the lowest level reasonably practicable:
Firstly, substituting the hazard giving rise to the risk with a hazard that gives rise to a lesser risk,
Secondly, isolating the hazard from the person put at risk,
Thirdly, minimizing the risk by engineering means,
Fourthly, minimizing the risk by administrative means (for example, by adopting safe working practices or providing appropriate
training, instruction or information),
Fifthly, using personal protective equipment.
3. A combination of the above measures is required to be taken to minimize the risk to the lowest practicable if no single measure is sufficient for
that purpose.
