RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the The J Coordinator to the Infrastructure & Services Committee
Meeting dated 11 November 2014 providing a quarterly update on The J & Bicentennial
Community Centre.
REPORT
The purpose of this report is to advise Councillors of the The J and Bicentennial Community
Centre’s (BCC) activities for the period ending 30 September 2014. The report will also provide
some commentary on the progress of the centre prior to the first quarter where background
information is required.
The J is a versatile and functional space for community, youth and commercial events and is also
home to current tenants University of the Sunshine Coast (and TAFE) and Noosa Community
Radio. Since opening, The J has offered a combination of flexible meeting spaces, conference
rooms and facilities for hire, complemented by covered outdoor areas and stylish open foyers.
The large theatre/auditorium space right in the heart of Noosa, means that The J is the ideal
venue for a wide range of programming. The J also offers school holiday activities and regular
live entertainment.
The BCC main hall opened in 1988, with the addition of the annexe and demountable building in
later years. Areas available include the Main Hall, Meeting Rooms, Change Rooms, Kitchen,
Annexe and a demountable building. The main hall and annexe have been used for a variety of
community, sporting and cultural activities by individual community members and organisations
over the years for activities such as classes, meetings, rehearsals and workshops. The
demountable building was originally put on the site as a Noosa campus for the University of the
Sunshine Coast and more recently has been home to the Noosa Flexible Learning School.
